I'm killing my new Fatsia Japonica, where am I going wrong?

Ok, I got it a couple of weeks ago, it's huge and was in a 10 litre pot. Since I got it the leaves at the base have started to turn yellow and fall off. I have moved it into a bigger container but no luck.

The soil seems a bit dry but with all this rain I have not thought it would be a good idea to put more water. Yesterday I put almost 2 litres of water in it but the poor thing doesn't look better. Am I at the risk of drowning it?

I planted one of those in my garden last year. It needed plenty of water and if I missed a day it wilted. Took several weeks to establish itself and now it looks great. Mine has a few yellow leaves. In fact the ones I've seen at the garden centres are sometimes quite shabby specimens.

The leaves can have an 'umbrella' affect amd prevents the rain from hydrating the soil adequately. Remember to feed it too.

I fnd things in pots always need watering, even if it rains. Provided the pot has good drainage i wouldn't worry about overwatering it. I also find they do better in shade, where are you keeping it?

Thank you. It is in a semishade position. I would add more water then. Wonder if I should move it out of the container into the soil. Would it require less watering?
(it is about 3 ft high)

Would that advice apply to Aucuba variegatas too? (well they are not that yellow but they have some lazy leaves at the back )

Could you appreciate the fact I'm a complete beginner?

They grow quite big. It's probably better off in the ground. If you transfer it, remember to keep watering until it develops a reliable root system. Might take a few weeks.

Thank you.

I will do
