How did I kill my tomato plant THIS time??

OK, I'm not a gardener. In fact I have killed spider plants. And ferns, and aloe vera plants and cacti

But this year I was given 2 strong and healthy tomato plants, about a foot tall. Being told they needed lots of water, I've tried to make sure the soil is always on the moist side, although I do admit I didn't put them in larger pots soon enough.

Anyway, they're looking very sad and limp, especially the top leaves. I've fed them and everything! Anyone got any hints for what I did wrong?? Or should I just accept I'm going to be a plant murderer for the rest of my days? Blush

I've just been given a cherry tree, god help it

Something is wrong with the roots so that water isn't getting through to the top. Could be too dry, or too wet so the roots have rotted. Tip one out of the pot to see which one it is.

Thank you, I'll tip one out and have a look tomorrow. I think I probably over watered them as they were indoors for a while Blush There aren't many flowers, so probably wouldn't have got many tomatoes anyway.

I would love to have green fingers Sad

Plants also need air in the soil, so keeping them waterlogged isn't good. What size pot are they in? Can you post photos?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/07/2019 23:41

I am firmly convinced that tomato plants are destined to look sick.

Too wet and too cold.

Have you had them on a windowsill rather than in a greenhouse?

justasking111 · 13/07/2019 23:45

Been a terrible year for tomatoes, OH has grown prize winners in the past this year a disaster, one sad little cherry tomato trying to ripen, the extended cold weather post Easter has set everything back. Leaves went yellow and shrivelled up.

chocolatespiders · 13/07/2019 23:48

Have they got flowers on? If so you need to feed them if you are not already.

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 14/07/2019 20:18

They were in my kitchen till I repotted them, (into pots about a foot across) as I thought it was too cold outside. I think I left them stood in water too long Blush

I also didn't feed them soon enough by the sounds of it.

Glad to hear its not just me tho, and thanks for all the help... I'd get a picture but I'm too embarrassed Blush I'll make sure I post in advance next time! if anyone ever entrusts me with plants again

It is really easy to mistake a drooping plant for one that needs water, when in fact it is waterlogged and drowning.

@TroubleWithNargles

Yes, I think that's what happened. I've definitely killed off other plants that way. The only things I can keep alive are chives! and weeds
