The one with yellow flowers comes back each year and I like it, just wondered what it was called to see if I can get any different varieties of it.

The one without flowers has just appeared, is it a weed?

Yellow Loosestrife?

Not sure about other one til flowers open. It's only a weed if you don't want it though Smile

Just looked up Yellow Loosestrife, yes i think that's it! Thank you. Looks as though you can also get purple ones.

If the other one flowers I'll see whether I like it. The only thing I worry about is last time I kept a 'weed' because I liked it, it ended up taking over half the garden. Grin

Fab Grin

Oh yes been there got that t-shirt! The warm weather and rain in June has made all my plants look brilliant... but the weeds went crazy too, even if they did look quite nice!

Purple loosestrife is a completely different plant - I think they like similar conditions.

It's actually dotted loosestrife, Lysimachia punctata. Yellow loosestrife is a UK wild flower Lysimachia vulgaris, and the one grown in gardens is dotted loosestrife, even though gardeners tend to call it yellow loosestrife.

If you look at the petals with a hand lens, you should see that they are edged with glandular hairs - tiny yellow hairs with yellow knobs on. I only found out about them yesterday - quite exciting!

The other one could just be a non flowering stem of the loosestrife - see how similar/different you think the leaves are.

MereDintofPandiculation thank you, I'm going to look out for the little hairs with knobs on when I get home from work! The other plant has different leaves and is in a different part of the garden so i don't think it's the same type of plant.

The one without flowers now has flowers. Is it a weed? I quite like it.

It's one of the Spireas. It's a garden plant, but often escapes into the wild.
