Shrub ideas for dry sunny spot?

My mum fancies a new shrub for her birthday - it’s a spot that gets quite a lot of sun and it very dry. Even lavender doesn’t do brilliantly. I’ve heard that garden centres are stocking drought tolerant plants now?

Will any of these work?

  1. Cistus x hybridus_
_2. Ceanothus x delileanus (or a ceanothus variety that will fit the space)
  1. Eleagnus "Quicksilver"
  2. Hibiscus syriacus “Oiseau Blue”
  3. Pittosporum tobira
6. Convolvulus cneorus
  1. Cistus x purpureus
  2. Spirea japonica “Gold Mound”

What is the soil like? Clay, loam or sand? Digging in leaf mold, soil wetters and mulching the plants with a chunky mulch will aid water retention.

Start with the soil and improve it.

Chunky mulches look less aesthetically pleasing than the sawdusty shite that's often on sale, but test after test says it's the best Smile because it lets the water through, unlike the claggy sawdusty type.

@orangeshoebox Hydrangeas need lots of watering! Mine thrive on my wet clay soil.
Cystus like dry soil.
