Evergreen climber

We've recently had some leylandii trees removed which were part of a hedge. We've kept a few but one side is dead. The tree surgeon has said it won't go green again so I'm looking for something evergreen to cover it. I want something that's a fast grower and it needs to cover about 3 feet wide by 10 feet high.

I was thinking ivy but I would like something that flowers ideally. I'm not sure whether an evergreen clematis would have enough leaves to cover the area. I'm not sure if I could grow the two together? Or perhaps ivy and a climbing rose.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you have something vigorous enough to go quickly to 10ft it won't stop there!

You'll also have difficult getting something to establish - the remaining leylandii will be taking the moisture and nutrient out of the soil. An ivy would do it (you can get ones with variegated leaves), but I think you'd struggle with a rose.

I’ve grown clematis and honeysuckle through Leylandi ( next doors) no problem. We felled several at the back of our garden and left 4 ft stumps to attach trellis. Then we dug over and enriched the soil, now both clematis and roses grow happily.

Ivy is pretty, but a real thug and a pain to get rid of if it starts spreading places you don't want it to be. I planted some Henry's honeysuckle to cover a wall a few weeks ago and that seems to be shooting up quickly.

Does the area get much sun? Do you have a photo? What region are you in?

Isf it's a sunny spot passionflower grows quite vigorously. I'm in the SE and mine retains its leaves over winter. You might have to dig a bit of compost in but mine doesn't seem to choosy. I actually grew it from a cutting of a big one that was growing in rubbishy soil.

If it's shady would a climbing hydrangea work?

As per pp would mounting a panel of trellis help disguise the bare trees in the short term?

I wouldn't advise ivy as it truly does get everywhere. It might be nice for the first year or two but beyond that it becomes a hideous job.

Jasmine sounds perfect for the job

I planted a jasmine two years ago. It is now very bushy and about 6 feet tall. In full flower at the moment and I love it. It does best in full sun I think.

Have you thought of a solanum? It can be trained to climb. You can get purple or white ones and again, they do best in full sun.
