Help! New garden and heat

gardenstress · 29/06/2019 16:00

We have just had our garden all planted up, We know we were late, but this is just the way it happened.

I've been advised to give my garden a very good watering (e.g. 10 mins our tree) once a week and twice if it is very hot. Thing is the foliage under my trees have all wiltered in this extreme heat. I know I shouldn't water it now as it will be scorched but I am wondering if I should go round later and give the ground around my new planting a good watering, ignoring the 1-2 times week.

Help!

A new garden In This weather needs doing every night. Have you put Dow any mulch to,stopevaporation

gardenstress · 29/06/2019 16:13

No mulch as the foliage we have on top is some kind of creeper that is going to cover it all eventually.

I know this heat is not good! I will be out there at 7pm! I've even got some turf. Hmm

Will it be ok if I give it a good watering every night, even if it is 30 degrees in the day? It is going to cool down next week a bit.

The heat at the moment is extreme. The watering advice you were given would be for a normal summer day. You should water your plants if they are wilting.
It’s better to water them in the cool of the evening so the water does not evaporate. You could also water early in the morning, if the forecast is for a very hot day.

Beebumble2 · 29/06/2019 16:20

When you water try to direct the water into the planting area, rather than spray everything. I’d use the hose to fill a watering can so that the water is directed.

gardenstress · 29/06/2019 16:20

Thank you.
So, they will be OK until I water later?
Sorry, coming across really dumb. This is my first garden. I've always lived in a flat.

Thx
They are actually coming back in a week to put an irrigation system in which will help long term. I'm just panicking I am going to kill it all in the mean time. There is turf, 14 trees and loads of planting.

They should be ok until tonight.I have few wilty things in pots which will perk up as it gets cooler and revive when I water them.
Watering every night in this weather until they are established and a lot of water as you are trying to reach the roots.

Beebumble2 · 29/06/2019 16:26

Yes, they’ll revive when you water later. Good to have an irrigation system. The weather is so unpredictable, we have one for the garden and one for the greenhouse.
The irony is that the water butt has an overflow to the pond for times of excess rain!
I hope you enjoy your garden. Remember we all have successes and failures, its all part of the fun of gardening. Although some failures can be costly.

I planted loads of new plants last year and this year. I am in the south east and we went weeks without rain and top temperatures. I got some excellent advice here and that saved my garden! I spent about an hour every night watering. You won’t over water them, I’m sure.

What time can I go out and water do you think. I need to be back for Love Island and my glass of red.

It's actually best to water them in the early hours of the morning, giving them enough time to soak it up before the heat of the sun sets in. Next best option is of course, night time. They'll survive until then, even if wilted a bit.

gardenstress · 29/06/2019 18:14

I think I'll give them a watering tonight then again in the morning as I think I's enjoy having a coffee and enjoying the freshness of the morning.

What causes scorched leaves is underwatering, and too little water will also cause all the little roots to die back as well.

Drench everything. Leaves do not get scorched by having water on them, it's an old wives' tale - just look at what happens when it rains and then the sun comes out afterwards, they have evolved over millions of years to cope with it.

In the heat we have had today I have soaked all the plants in my garden - twice. Soil and foliage, and the surrounding paved areas as well to increase the humidity. Once at about 8 this morning, and again at 5pm.

BooseysMom · 29/06/2019 19:34

I love the mornings.. best part of the day. I also love having coffee whilst sat outside listening to the birds! And yes, best time to water too although as it's so hot i watered everything tonight too. This is our first ever garden too and it's like a whole new life! It was a new-build and the turf was already there when we moved in. It really suffered in the heat waves last summer and the soil is heavy clay. I tried watering it but nothing helped. We would need a sprinkler to have any benefit. We haven't bothered though as eventually we want to turf out the turf and plant it all! Good luck with your garden

gardenstress · 30/06/2019 09:29

Our is a new build too. We left it for 3 years as the quotes we got were gobsmacking. We finally found someone realistic and they spent all week here doing it all. A bit of my turf isn't looking too happy so not sure what to do about that.

Can I put my sprinkler on the turf all day?

OP posts:
BooseysMom · 30/06/2019 19:46

@gardenstress.. we were quoted stupid money just to have about 30 small slabs laid to extend the patio as you know with new builds they provide the bare minimum. A garden design company quoted about £1,500 so we thought bugger that, we'll either do it ourselves or not bother!
You can leave the sprinkler on all day but watch the water bills! That's why we haven't got one ..yet!

boxlikeamarchhare · 30/06/2019 19:51

Do you have plants as well as grass? I might have missed that bit but I bought this a month ago and have installed it this weekend. Just for my front border - it works, I am impressed for the £. I might add a timer depending on the summer we have.

llangennith · 30/06/2019 20:33

Put the sprinkler on the lawn and leave it on overnight. Turf is too expensive to lose.
I water my plants thoroughly in the evening. I don't get up early enough to do it in the morning before it gets too hot in my garden.
