Yes! My mum still has an apple tree in her garden that I grew from seed age about 10. All six seeds germinated and then most survived into sapling-hood (?!) but only this one has lasted and borne fruit. Takes a good few years before you get apples off of 'em tho - at least 10 ime.

I think most apple trees that you buy in gardening centres are grafted onto different root stock though. However, I have no idea what that actually means

Hi Mellow

yes you can we started growing some from actual apple seeds at the begining of summer and they are coming along wonderfully!

I have a 30 cm conker tree in the pot at the moment. Not sure where to plant it though!

pop them into a plastic bag (clear) so it is like a mini greenhouse.

sparklesandwine · 27/07/2007 09:22

yes in a small pot in the sun, we just left ours in the garden and they did ok - you'll need to keep them away from the snails though!

Hi
No need for holes.Just pop on a sunny window sill with a clear bag over the top loosely and pop and elastic band around to keep it in place.Check every few days that it doesnt need waterering and only remove the clear bag when you have too because theres a darn big shoot sprouting up 1 Good luck.

I think the reason they graft onto a different rootstock at garden centres is because it allows you to limit the size and speed that it grows. So they might put a potentially large tree onto a smaller rootstock so that it grows slower and therefore is better suited to the average garden.

I think it also increases disease resistance.

However, dd has planted a couple of apple seeds, so I am heartened to see that they might survive!

No... once you have a shoot, you should take the bag off so it doesn't rot.

Orange and lemon pips grow best. I remember my granny having them in pots in her bathroom when I was child. They had little fruit on too. Lovely.

Be prepared to cut your tree down though, don't trees grown from seeds (except the citrus) grow MAHOOSIVE?

I have memories of growing an acorn and being thrilled when it not only sprouted but grew like a weed! I also remember my mum chopping it down and getting rid of it not too long after
