What's this rose problem? (Pic)

My standard rose has buds that are kind of black and dry looking and aren't opening properly. It did this last year too but oddly it's the only rose in my rose garden that is doing this.

Over to you, expert gardeners! Grin

I don't know, but have you had a lot of rain? My lovely bushes have many flowers on them that aren't opening and are just rotting in bud form. Gah!

Thankfully there are lots more still swelling.

i suspect it is to do with the cold weather, which means they were ready to open and then it wasn't warm enough, so they have died as a bud

Mine are dying as buds too, OP. Very sad Sad As pps have said, I think the current cool, wet weather is to blame.

Could it be Botrytis blight?

"Botrytis blight causes buds and flowers to develop abnormally and turn brown. It may also cause cane canker. Flowers may have irregular flecks and brown spots; older flowers tend to rot quickly. Soft, brown spots appear on leaves, stems, and flowers following periods of low temperatures and wet conditions. Affected parts of roses may be covered with a gray mold and buds fail to open. The fungus usually requires a wound to invade the tissue and can persist year-round on plant parts and in the soil. Prune out at first appearance.

Lookalikes: Thrips (streaks on flower petals versus irregular flecks and spots)

Thanks everyone!
It's such a mystery because none of the other roses have it. It's new rose garden with about 20 roses, so wouldn't it be unusual for none of the other roses to have this despite being planted around the same time (two years ago) and with the same soil/weather conditions? It did it last year (again, the only rose) and it rejuvenated after I cut the buds off so I'll do that again this year.
It doesn't sound like Botrytis blight but I'll have another look when it stops raining.

It sounds like rain damage to me. Some varieties are more susceptible than others.Maybe something to do with how tightly packed the petals are? Or maybe due to parentage - how much middle eastern roses feature in the ancestry. It's not a problem in dog roses!
