PlantSnap suggested winter hazel but I think it might be philadelphus coronarius? White flowers which have all but died off now. It's a bit big and I want to prune it but not sure when is the best time or how far back I can take it. Thanks.

I think you're correct and it's a Philadelphus.

Prune immediately after flowering. You can take it quite far back but not all the way if you want flowers next year. I would try to get some air into it by cutting into the oldest wood.. Generally cut back one third each year.

Thanks florentina1 that's helpful, I started pruning earlier and then the heavens opened! I'll go back to it during the week.

If it's a philadelphus - and it looks like one - the flowers will have been very fragrant.

Prune now as it needs to grow the wood on which it will flower next year..

Winter hazel, Corylopsis, has alternate leaves. This has its leaves in opposite pairs, so I'd go with Philadelphus. Good rule of thumb in pruning if you don't know the identity is to prune just after flowering (unless you want to have berries, of course) - except that if it flowers very late in the year you might want to leave pruning to early spring, just before bud break.

Thanks for the great advice everyone, I finally finished pruning it today. Definitely Philadelphus, there were a few flowers left, lovely fragrance. I took it quite far back in the end as it was very congested. I also discovered a blackcurrant bush behind it Smile
