Help! What on earth is this plant and is is going to eat me?

I was gifted this plant (which I thought was a form of cactus) a few months ago and told it would be happy both indoors or out. At first I had it indoors but it seemed to attract fruit flies so out onto the decking it went.

Recently, from being very neat and tidy looking it has suddenly sprouted all these shoots and a flower and is starting to look like something out of The Day of the Triffids!!

What is this plant, and should I prune these shoots??

Wow

Looks like a type of sempervivum (or houseleek). After it flowers I think the main plant dies but it leaves behind little rosettes which continue.

houseleek...the little rosettes can be potted on and grow into new clumps. Very hardy and needs no attention and will grow in the poorest, thinnest soil

Interesting! Thank you.

Sempervivum. This one is colloquially called a cobweb cactus, although it isn't a cactus (member of the family Cactaceae). That's looking a very nice specimen!

It won't like to be wet, especially over winter. Thin well drained soil in a sunny position is ideal.

If it starts making chirruping noises, it's calling for reinforcements. If I were you I would take it out to sea in a lead lined locked box and drop it in the ocean.

No don’t prune it. You can pit it on though and it will keep making smaller plants. Sempervivum - always living. It’s a lovely one!

Pot! Not pit..
