What is this and what’s wrong with it?

We had our garden done a few minutes this ago including the garden designer choosing and planting all the shrubs. Unfortunately he was called away with a family emergency on the day he was meant to talk me through what was what and how to care for it. They didn’t leave any labels and I haven’t heard from him since and don’t want to bother him.

Some of the plants are doing really well but others are struggling. Any idea what these are whether I can save them? To make things easier I have his list of suggested plants, but I don’t know if he stuck rigidly to it. Any help much appreciated, I am such a novice! I’ve added 2 pics of one plant to this post, will post the other plant and the list in separate posts.

“A few months ago” that should have said above, not minutes.

Here’s the other unhappy plant:

Whatever it is, it's got pests by the look of it. Can you see any greenfly or anything on it? If so, spray with Rose Clear, give it a couple of weeks and then spray with Fungus Clear. Hopefully that should do the trick.

The garden designer should have a list of the plants they used and a planting plan - maybe ask them for a copy.

Ha! Cross posted...

It looks like it has aphids. Can you look underneath the leaves and see whether there are black or green insects (in large quantities, I would expect)? It should be sprayed with bug clear or something like that.

Why don't you send the photos to the garden designer and ask their advice?

DonPablo · 09/06/2019 16:21

Plant 1 is the Eleagnus. Feed and water it, they're pretty bullet proof, so weird that it's not happy. Might just be sulking.

Just looking at the second one now

GraceSlicksRabbit · 09/06/2019 16:22

Rollingpine last time I saw him he said he’d just been told his daughter’s cancer had come back so I really don’t want to bother him, particularly as the price I paid didn’t include aftercare.

The second plant is the escallonia.

On a closer look, the first one could also be the osmanthus. Can you take another photo?

GraceSlicksRabbit · 09/06/2019 16:50

Thanks Don Pablo. I have this other pic, have popped out so can’t take any more right now. Just before I left I checked for pests on the first one, couldn’t see any. I had actually already tried Fungus Clear as I had some from treating our Quince tree last year (it worked a treat). But doesn’t seem to have done anything.

Re the planting plan, I have a sneaking suspicion that there wasn’t one and he just freestyled on the day (I was at work)- it was less “design your planting” and more “I’ll get you some plants”. The main thing they did was build raised sleeper beds and lay artificial turf.
