Growing courgettes

Hello - I've always wanted to grow courgettes so today I bought two plants from B&Q and hope to be able to repot them and grow them somewhere!

Questions:

Can I grow them in pots? Have a yarden so need to be able to really and can't find a clear answer online.

Do I keep them inside for a while?

Any other tips! Thanks

They need really big pots. Massive. The plants will grow to be about 1m. I’ve grown them in giant buckets before.

Have they been kept outside at b&q? I’m quite cavalier about shop bought plants and would put them straight out.

One thing to remember with courgettes in pots, is that they will need feeding after the first 4 weeks, possibly the first fortnight, as they take all nutrients out of the soil and they need alot of water which washes nutrients out.

I grow mine on the corners of my raised beds so that they hang over the side and don't take up all the room.

Yes they were outside!

I've put them outside now actually but wondering if I need to bring them in?

Ok I'll get some massive pots! Would like to build a wooden raised bed thing - when I say I what I mean is my dad who has taken up wood work in his retirement - then they could have gone in them!

When will they be ready for a massive pot? I'm such a novice. Enthusiastic tho! How much care do they need?

Thank you @sackrifice what do you feed with? I got some chicken pellet things

I’d put them straight in the pot where they’re going to grow. Add the pellets into the soil you’re using then plant them in.

Brill thank you @Iggly

I always grow them in pots, big ones admittedly but they do fine. Be warned slugs love them so do a late night slug check until they are a a bit bigger.

foodiefil · 02/06/2019 20:28

@Rosieposy4 is there anything that can keep them off them completely? Can you cover them with that fleece stuff I saw in B&Q today?

Give them liquid feed too when they start flowering. But really big pots...

foodiefil · 02/06/2019 20:41

Will do thank you @ComeBackBarack

I don’t think fleece helps with the slugs tbh, keeps the courgettes warm if temps dip but it is late enough now for that not to be an issue

I’m growing 2 variety’s this year, one lot I planted in a old tyre, the other in what used to be my compost heap. I would say they are the easiest veg to grow, I always end up with loads and have to give some away 🤣

I’ve grown them in pots but you really need to stay on top of watering. Get the biggest pots you can manage and mix slow release plant food and water retaining gel things through the compost you use.

Bob, slugs are hammering my cucamelon seedlings at the moment and I’ve tried garlic spray but not with chilli. Thank you! Will boil some up when I get home. Grin

The advantage of growing in pots is that you can put a band of copper tape round the pot (literally like copper sellotape) - helps keep slugs away

Freudianslip1 · 09/06/2019 09:17

To save boiling potions just buy a bottle of Tabasco sauce and place a ratio of about 1 part sauce to 10 parts water in a spray bottle and use that way. For the first time in about 10 years I now have hostas 😁
