I need a very low ground cover plant. Something that will spread across the ground quickly, be dense but won't grow taller than 6 inches.
Any ideas?

Nasturshums?

jenthehen · 01/06/2019 22:10

Bugle

Vinca

HardAsSnails · 01/06/2019 22:11

Sweet Woodruff is lovely and under used.

Mixingitall · 01/06/2019 22:13

Ivy

Knittedfairies · 01/06/2019 22:14

Another vote for vinca.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have to google these though as the names mean nothing to me as not a natural gardener.
I have seen a purple moss like plant growing over walls. Is that a good ground cover?
Have also seen something which I think is Crane's Bill. Would that work?

That vinca looks lovely!

Do you mean purple flowers when you say moss like plant? Is it aubretia ?

HardAsSnails · 01/06/2019 22:22

Cranesbills are hardy geraniums which are great ground cover, just look for lower growing ones as some are taller than you want.

Leah2005 · 01/06/2019 22:22

Don't plant ivy.

HardAsSnails · 01/06/2019 22:23

I think you might be thinking of campanula.

Knittedfairies · 01/06/2019 22:24

Ivy is a real thug. Vinca is evergreen, so will look ok year round.

jessicawessica · 01/06/2019 22:33

Yes campanula that's it but it does look similar to aubretia so not sure which it is.
I already have ivy growing through from next door. It's starting to grow up the side of the house. I actually quite liked it but it sounds like it's not good....why?

Ivy is a bastard and gets everywhere and it's so hard to get rid of.
It suffocates other plants.

I like creeping varieties of thyme

Leah2005 · 01/06/2019 22:44

You will have a nightmare with the ivy if you don't get on top of it quick. It spreads like wildfire and strangles everything. Campanula has a more bell like flower than aubretia. Both are lovely though.

jessicawessica · 01/06/2019 22:46

Ivy sounds like a dream compared to the blackberry brambles I've got atm.
Would ivy suffocate them?
I've got a huge tub of thyme as I love the smell. Didn't realise there was a creeping variety.

Look at creeping Jenny. It's a beautiful coloured leaf with little yellow flowers. Spreads like crazy but really easy to pull out if it gets too much.

jessicawessica · 01/06/2019 22:51

Creeping Jenny looks lovely. Can I plant any of these suggestions now or have I left it too late?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 01/06/2019 22:56

Creeping phlox

HardAsSnails · 01/06/2019 23:13

Whatever you choose, avoid Houttuynia cordat, it is the most foul smelling plant and an invasive bastard too.

HardAsSnails · 01/06/2019 23:15

Now is fine for planting, just water well when you plant and consider using a mulch.

jessicawessica · 01/06/2019 23:30

Thank you all so much, some great ideas.

A small variety of Persicaria covers well.

jessicawessica · 02/06/2019 19:49

Thanks, some lovely suggestions.
