Allotment paths

I use weed suppressant and bark chips on my paths...but they get very weedy. If you lay it more thickly does that stop it? I don’t have time to weed paths and beds!

What do people use?

Giving this a bump for you OP even though I am personally a fan of the 'crazy paving' style of path Blush

We use 4" of wood chip on top of Mypex and we still get weeds. Fortunately, they are only rooted in the woodchip and will pull out easily!

I used secondhand (therefore free or inexpensive on Gumtree or FB Marketplace) paving slabs. They completely suppress the weeds.

Yep, we use second hand paving slabs or old bits of decking. It’s looks a bit scruffy, but hey, it’s free and it’s the allotment so all good.

You will get weeds in wood chip, as it is making compost the whole time it is sitting there.

I have changed my paths to weed suppressant and wood chip this year on my plot. I'm still getting a bit of bindweed at the sides but it is a lot easier than the weeds from the grass paths getting into the beds and a lot less strimming. I had bark chip down on my back garden whilst the DCs were young as it composted down I used it on the borders and just replaced it every few years.

I put down free slabs on weed suppressant, turned my back (for a year) and it got completely matted with weeds. Don’t know if my weed suppressant wasn’t strong enough or if I’m expecting too much of it.

It’s better than before when I had grass....but it stills gets really weedy. And the shifting thecbark chips when they’ve decomposed is a massive job...

Other people seem to manage it better. But I think they probably use weed killer and I don’t want to.
Than you for the bump!,

I still have grass, I can strim or mow it. The one patch of membrane + chips I do have gets grassy and is a pain.
