Planting a tree/shrub in memory of someone

My ex husband (DF of DS14 and DS10) passed away suddenly recently and it would have been.a big birthday for him on Thursday.

We're thinking of planting something in the garden in memory of him and wondered if anyone could help? something fast growing preferably with pretty white blossom (I have absolutely no idea) that requires minimal upkeep.

Our garden has nothing in it (football mad sons) but patio and lawn and is sunny most of the time but with shade in various corners.

Can anyone help??

A mountain ash would fit the bill nicely.

So sorry for your loss and what a wonderful idea! My suggestion (though a tad obvious) would be orange blossom - it's grows relatively quickly and takes a hammering from footballs and smells nice too..

A white rambling rose would grow quickly & is robust. Grow up against garage or hedge.

My workmates bought me a lovely compact little tea rose named after my mum when she passed away suddenly a couple of years ago. I planted it in a old ceramic umbrella stand which she loved in the back garden and it’s still thriving. I kicked it over with a football when playing with the DSs a few weeks ago and smashed the umbrella stand 😭 but transplanted it into something a bit sturdier and it’s still going strong.

Jasmine is nice as its scented and doesn't need much love.

Amelanchier xx

I planted a rose called remember me on what would have been my late husbands 60th birthday. He Really wanted to make it too his 60th but died the month before.
It is a lovely hybrid tea rose. Not white but a almost copper colour and scented. Vigorous grower with blooms from June to late September. In fact I have had my first blooms open this week.
I went for the bush but it is also available as a full or half standard.

Exhorchorda is beautiful and very easy to care for. You could uunder plant it with white snowdrops and white crocus for the winter. And white cosmos purity for summer and white chrysanthemums for Autumn. That way you will have some thing all year round . All of these would look lovely in a large pot, which will protect the plants from the football.

We have a lovely rose called Kew Gardens which is covered in white flowers all summer and is also pretty tough: www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/kew-gardens

I’d choose a Philadelphus that flowers now. Grows quickly, comes in evergreen varieties, is easy to look after and robust.

I forgot to add nicely scented too Smile

Dog wood is one of the prettiest trees.

If you wanted something smaller, a scented snowball viburnum would be lovely, but sure how resistant to footballs it would be though.

A Magnolia, even? There are so many varieties to choose from.

Thank you so much for all your responses, some lovely (and easy!) ideas for a complete novice like me.

I'm sorry for those who have also experienced losses..

I can't grow viburnum in my garden because it gets eaten by the beetle. Of these suggestions I think orange blossom shrub (needs sun, grows to about 1.5m wide and tall) or amelanchier (tree/shrub, grows bigger) are the easiest to care for.

Sorry for your loss Flowers
