For shaded area in clay soil.

I've got a quite shady border which is mostly clay - the evergreens I have (or have had) in it include mahonia, escallonia, berberis and pyracantha (against the fence).

The mahonia is a bit disappointing because some smell lovely when they flower (in winter) but mine doesn't, so if you get one choose more wisely than I did.

I was looking at this for a shady spot where I want to hide next door's incontinent bins, but oyou'd probably need to dig lots of sand and improver into a clay soil

How about a Choisya, Mexican orange blossom. I grow one to hide the coal bunker, it’s just under a Larch. It’s evergreen, has lovely scented white flowers and is easy to prune and maintain.

I've had two clay gardens that were quite shady. Plants that have done well for me are Sarcococca, Eleagnus ebbingei, Mahonia x media, variegated Pittosporum, Fatsia, Viburnum tinus and Persian ivy 'Sulphur Heart'. Evergreen ferns and hellebores are also great for the gaps between and underneath.
