Tall hardy perennials

I'm a fairly novice gardener. I have a large sloping flowerbed in full sun. I'm looking for some tall bright flowers that will keep coming back every year and flower all summer. Not lupins as they just die every year and don't come back. They seem to attract some kind of bug. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Verbena bonariensis
Salvia
Penstemon
Asters

Pityparty01 · 27/05/2019 11:45

Great thanks. I've got some asters already but thanks for the other names

Centaurea ( giant cornflower), Lychnis, Japanese Anemone ( non invasive variety like wild swan), Delphinium, Knautia and . To mane but a few.😊

Name !

Campanulas - there are many different types (some are short) but campanula lactiflora and campanulas persicifolia are two tall ones

Some lilies are tall.

Verbena bonariensis is nice, I'm not sure it's the hardiest though.

The other thing to consider is plants which self-seed, in particular foxgloves. I've never been able to grow them from packet seed, but if you buy a few then you should get more appear in subsequent years.

And alliums. You can stick some bulbs in for flowering about now among other plants which take over later in the season.

Pityparty01 · 27/05/2019 13:47

Fantastic. Thanks all

Oh, and don't forget roses, if you like them - but make sure you get ones which repeat flower. Some are inherently tall, others can be grown as standards or half standards.

And phlox.

My lupins come back

Rudbeckia, red valerian, euphorbias and Geums are great. Avoid foxgloves and iris/lilies if you have pets as very toxic. Lady's mantle is pretty and looks lovely growing with Geum Totally Tangerine.I have some Artemisia which doesn't flower but has lovely silver foliage and have verbena bonisaris growing up through it.

Helianthus (perennial sunflower). Lemon Queen is a good one. Heleniums are also lovely, and nepeta is great & flowers for ages.

SaveKevin · 27/05/2019 17:51

I’ve got euphorbia that look stunning in my sunny bed, the bees love it.
I bought it reduced on an off chance so I’ve just googled what type it is and it’s a Characas

What about climbers? I’ve got a few alliums, chives. I’ve also got some self seeded foxgloves that look amazing (but they don’t tend to like really sunny).

Day lilies (hemerocallis) I was going to say mullein (verbascum) and then remembered it's biennial Blush, but it seeds itself a fair bit so will probably stay around.

My lupins come back

I think they're one of the plants which sometimes gets slugged into oblivion - delphiniums sometimes are too, IME.

TwistofFate · 29/05/2019 07:17

I really like Cirsium Rivulare and Gaura both are quite bushy at the base but the flowering stems are more delicate and look lovely swaying in the breeze.

LazyLemur · 29/05/2019 11:01

Do you have something to support a climber? Rose Zéphirine Drouhin. Easy care, no thorns, non stop heavy flowering until winter if you prune it well in feb. Beautiful bright pink. I love it so much.

Verbena bonariensis is hardy where I live, especially if sheltered. I'd grow something pretty and orange underneath it.

What did you get from the garden centre? Grin

Monarda squaw. Beautiful red flowers the bees love them. Flowers for ages and easy to care for. The leaves smell of bergamot.

BellMcEnd · 31/05/2019 22:42

Penstemon are beautiful and loads of variety

Pityparty01 · 01/06/2019 17:41

I bought :-

Penstemon (Phoenix apple blossom)
Monarda (knight violet)
Phlox
Coreopsis (sunkiss)
Gaillardia (arizona red and Mesa peach)
Leucanthamum (banana cream)

And some ground cover plants and a couple of shrubs

Had a lovely time 😊
