Can I cut back my erysimum Bowles Mauve?

Will erysimum Bowles Mauve respond favourably to a hearty chop? I love it but I have so many clumps of it and it's threatening to take over the flowerbeds Grin

I keep putting it off as I love the flowers as do the bees. I purchased some half-circle supports from Wilko to keep it off the lawn (thank you to the person here who suggested them).

I’ve just given mine a ‘Chelsea chop’ taking out the long spent flowering stalks, but being careful to leave the stalks with emerging buds.
I’d wait until Autumn to give it a more drastic prune.

Ps, it’s easy to propagate by taking cuttings from non flowering stems.

I'm about to cut mine back exactly as Beebumble says.
They're not a long lived shrub, I usually pull them out after 2 or 3 years and replace with fresh plants. I've just taken cuttings for next year's plants.
I have a bright yellow erysimum which isn't very subtle and I dotted them all over the place thinking they were Bowles Mauve Blush. So huge splodges of yellow clashing away. It's such a good flowerer that I haven't the heart to get rid.

I’ve bought Red Jep, it’s a lovely red/purple/orange mix on each flower. Can’t wait to get a non flowering stem to propagate.

Thank you both! To give it the chop it needs I'd end up removing tons of buds - they all seem to be flowering stems! Grin

Mine must be 4 years old and still going great guns. I'm in the SE and they flowered right through Dec, Jan, Feb...

I'll wait a bit longer then try and reduce them. Thanks for the propagation tip!

Lol at the yellow splodges Hizz - nice and cheery Grin

Red Jep sounds lovely bee.

Beebumble2 I have Red Jep as well. It's not as vigorous as the others but just as easy to propagate, in fact I would use a flowering stem and just remove the flower and most of the leaves.

Thanks Hizz, I’ll give it a try. We’ve just had some welcome rain, so I’m in for today.
