We have recently moved in to a new property. Can anyone please tell me what is in my bed, what I should keep and what should go? More pics to follow

Well I’m quite new here. Hello!

I might be wrong but the yellow flowers in your first post look like yellow Day Lilly to me. I love Day lilies. They flower every year. The flowers don’t last long but there are loads of them and the leaves are nice and tall. You can lift some and move them if you want to.

The lovely pale pink flowers are hardy geraniums (I think). Again lovely flowers and pretty leaves that grow in round clumps and cover the ground nicely.

Hello 🖐 and thank you.

My neighbour said they don't flower for long and suggested I dig them up. I really like them and will be keeping.

The plant with orange “flowers” in your first, fourth and fifth pics is Euphorbia Griffithii, either Fireglow or Dixter. Be careful of the sap

Renovirgin2018 · 24/05/2019 21:40

Thanks @BobTheDuvet, that's a job for tomorrow then. There seems to be something very similar with white flowers too. Thought they may be alpine strawberries but maybe that's wishful thinking??

@Trethew excuse my ignorance, why do I need to be careful of the sap?

It burns/irritates.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 24/05/2019 22:08

Yes definitely wear gloves when tackling euphorbia. You may see white sap like in dandelion stems but it isn’t nice on skin.

i think I can see those, I think they might be - leave them, you'll know soon enough!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/05/2019 22:46

Obviously you've got some ferns. The long leaves in various places may be crocosmia, aka montbretia - if so it will have orange flowers later in the year.

OP you can get bare root alpine strawberries on ebay super cheap. I got 13 babies for 4.99. I love those plants.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/05/2019 23:52

Second set down, right hand side - l think there's a nettle about a third of the way down, with what looks like a willowherb of some sort next to it . If it is, that's one to get rid of.

florentina1 · 25/05/2019 08:15

Always wear gardening gloves or rubber gloves when weeding an unknown garden. Not just sap which can irritate like crazy but, also, the previous owner may have used chemicals on the garden. I once weeded and then put my hands on my face. I looked like the monster from the deep..

Renovirgin2018 · 25/05/2019 08:25

Ok great, thanks all.

Pull the herb bennet, the nettle and the willowherb.

Leave the rest for now.

What about the fern? My neighbour thinks I should get rid of it but I quite like it and think it adds interest. Will it take over?

Ferns are a matter of personal choice. I like them and think that they add a different texture. Dh is not so keen.

Leave it in until/if/when you decide the space.

Apileofballyhoo · 25/05/2019 13:01

Leave the fern! You can always decide later if you want to take it out and replace. A shady corner with a fern and a tree and a foxglove always looks so pretty and restful during hot weather.

I'd get rid of the euphorbia, but that's just my personal taste. Your crocosmia might be red. They like lots of water so if they are doing well where they are your garden mightn't be suitable for plants that like to be very well drained. It's exciting getting to know a new garden!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2019 17:32

I'd keep the ferns, at least some of them.

I'm not that keen on euphorbia either, but until you've got more idea what else you want, I'd keep so of the larger clumps if they're in sensible places eg in the last photo maybe just keep the larger clump near the fence
