I’ve been googling and am flumoxed Confused

I have a blank canvas front garden. It’s small, north facing and the house casts a shadow over the garden, so the wall against the house get some sun in the evening but not until late. It’s not boggy but is not dry.

We have a south facing wall which is in full sun all day during the summer.

I have a number of plants in pots, that people have given us over the years, which I want to plant out. But I want to check where to put them Grin. They have been unloved, generally uncared for except for the odd water in summer. I’m hoping that means they will thrive anywhere, but before I make a huge mistake and they all die....

So, I have a hydrangea (not sure which type, sorry). I’m hoping that can go against the house (north facing, evening sun)?

I have 2 x clematis which I’m hoping can go in the sun, along with a rose.

I also have a camellia. i want to put it on an east facing wall. But I’ve read they shouldn’t go there. But this thing has seriously thrived wherever wherever it’s been.

Am I about to make a huge mistake with anything?

Any advice / thoughts gratefully accepted.

I wouldn't put the camellia on an east facing wall - in the winter the sun on an early morning frost can 'burn' them. Has yours ever been on an east facing wall before?

My hydrangea flourishes in shade (also north facing with evening sun) but I have to keep it well watered over a dry summer. Clematis is fine in sun (also don't let them dry out) My roses have never survived in pots :-(

Thanks.

The camellia has been inside our centrally heated house (it was a Christmas present and I didn’t realise it was an outdoor plant Grin) and for the past 2 years on our south facing - and full sun all day - patio.

Both of my camellias face east, and one in particular gets the full brunt of northeasterly gales as well. They seem quite happy. Perhaps I've been lucky.

I wouldn't put clematis in sun unless the roots are in the shade, they don't like hot roots.

I have a Camellia in my NNE facing garden. It flowers profusely at the start of every year (Jan/Feb) when nothing else is going on in the garden. However it is close to the house and my garden is very sheltered.

I might just put it in and see how it goes!

Could you put it in a large pot (with ericaceous soil) in the position you want it? That way you can move it easily if it seems a bit miserable.
