What is this plant?

It grows in the side of my gravel drive. It gets a single orange flower for a few days when the sun comes out. Now it's looking a bit sad and I'll. So I need to cut it back?

Complete novice here BTW

Could you post a picture?

IncognitaIgnorama · 21/05/2019 17:27

X post! Could be what's left from a monbretia? It looks like the stems from something that grows from a bulb, which is why it's looking a bit sad right now (though monbretia is usually summer flowering Confused)

Possibly a Day Lily, but it looks pretty sick.

Ohyesiam · 21/05/2019 17:28

Looks like crocosmia, have a google and see what you think.
It can be scarlet or orange.

Does the flower look like these?

IncognitaIgnorama · 21/05/2019 17:30

That's what I thought, OhyesIam-but don't you think it's a bit early in the season to be looking so yellow? (And the same, actually, for hemerocallis, I think)

Beekeeper1 · 21/05/2019 17:35

Looks to me like Gladdon (also known as Iris Foetidisima or Stinking Iris). Do the leaves smell very pungent and bitter if you crush or cut them? Does it have a pale mauvy/grey flower, followed by a bright orange seedpod which opens to reveal blackberry looking seeds? If so, it is a wild flower which favours growing in hedge bottoms and shady, wooded areas

catinboots99 · 21/05/2019 17:50

Oh wow thanks for the response. You are all so knowledgable. I googled all the plants you suggested and I'm pretty sure it's a Gladdon. It gets the berries.

It was originally in the bottom of the hedge until neighbour pulled it out and replaced with fence. Only this guy and the fuchsia survived

If it has an orange flower it is NOT a gladdon. As beekeeper says, pale mauve flower followed by orange berries

catinboots99 · 21/05/2019 18:26

Oh okay. Will look again

It's a tiger lily.

Enb76 · 30/06/2019 14:54

That’s a daylily (hemerocallis)

Beebumble2 · 30/06/2019 16:35

Yes day Lilley, I’d move the sickly one to where the other one is thriving.

catinboots99 · 30/06/2019 19:28

Thank you!

Sorry, forgot to ask. Should I cut the dead leaves off?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2019 22:30

I would, they're not doing any good.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/07/2019 10:22

Not a tiger lily, a day lily (Hemerocallis).

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2019 10:57

I've just realised that the plant in my parents garden which they always called a 'tiger lily' was, in fact, a day lily. Grin
