Acers that turn bright pink

I am looking for an Acer that will at some point in the year have bright, bright pink foliage. Does anyone know which variety would please? I also need to be able to grow it in a pot, ideally. Contemplating an Acer or a sambucus nigra for the south facing patio.

I’ve never seen a bright pink one but plenty with variegated green/pink leaves that look very pretty. Would that work?

Shin-deshojo
Beni-maiko

My favourite pink Acers are Shirasawanum and Acer Griseum.
Try also

Good choice. How is your garden doing, @Welltidy?I remember when you started it about the same time I had my old garden make-over done. I did a blog for the transformation. We both got so much help from @ShovetheHolly. I really miss her on these threads

Hi Florentina, I’ve just worked out who you are! I think you’ve been through a name change or two Smile

My garden is looking beeyootiful, thank you! It is absolutely unrecognisable. I kept some of the more established shrubs and a peony, but everything else in the garden was cleared and new plants have started to establish. The ground elder is pretty much all gone, and the ivy is under control. Both were hugely invasive when we started.

I’ve made many mistakes along the way, including buying loads in May one year so that everything flowered at once and by July I had very little in bloom!

My big wins have been lots of eriseyum Bowles mauve which have done superbly well and give masses of colour all year round, a magnolia, hydrangeas of all varieties, escallonia Pink Elle, and lots of viburnum, lilac and lavender.

I’ve also done very well out of Wilko £3 climbers as I have at least thirty of solanum (which is massive in a very sunny spot, pretty good in a less sunny spot) honeysuckle, various clematis, pink jasmine and Passion flower.

We cleared the whole of one side of the garden and planted rhubarbs, autumn and summer raspberries, thornless blackberries, a tayberry, strawberries, dwarf apple and berry and pear, carrots, parsnips, bettroot, peas, runner beans and sweet peas. Chillies, herbs and soon to have tomatoes on the patio.

Above all else, I am loving having such a pretty space to enjoy. It is so nice to be out there. It makes me really happy. Bank balance has taken a hit, mind you!

Starting the front garden now and trying to think before I buy!

How is your new garden? Are you still loving the change? It was beautiful straight away but I imagine it is looking more established.

I resurrected shove’s thread about shady plants a couple of months ago. I miss her too. She had so much insight.

It is lovely to read about your garden. I am still happy with mine. I never learn and it has gone back to being a bit overcrowded but it is very easy to maintain. It was our Golden Wedding recently and,of course, we got garden vouchers. I bought another large pot and A Robinia Casque Rouge. I also have a dog now and she has made my life complete.

I've never seen a Robinia before. I had a google and it looks stunning. I love seeing plants that are not the standard suburban garden shrubs/small trees. I am looking forward to receiving my acer and a Magnolia Black Tulip. I bought a Syringa Purple Sensation this year and, much as I like my standard white and lilac varieties, I am delighted with it.

I made a mistake with the bed in front of our bay window at the front of our house. I planted five Viburnum Davidii, but they scorched badly in the full sun. I have replaced them with more of the Eriseyum mauve bowles, and planted Hydrangea Little Lime at each end with jasmine behind the hydrangea. It is looking good and I am hopeful.

Looking good in my garden at the moment are two cistus, my much loved peony, the two huge weigela, ceanothus, French lavender, the ever present eriseyum and some poppies.

Many congratulations on your wedding anniversary and a dog would be the icing on my cake too.
