Well! I've just discovered the world of pelargoniums - who knew ! I feel like it's a whole world of plants I knew nothing about - I thought geraniums were those red 6" high ,trailing ivy leaved or perennial cranesbill type .I didn't know about these ones !

www.woottensplants.com/product/pelargonium-fir-tree-echoes-of-pink/?attribute_pa_pot-size=9cm for example

and

I've realised that I have to have a couple for my large ( 24" x24" ) white planters which I view a lot from above from my kitchen window - we're in an upper flat . The planters are on a passageway down to the garden ,fences both sides .Gets quite a bit of sun in summer but one side is shadier than the other ,plus it is a bit of a wind tunnel .

I like ferny foliage ,smaller leaves and I think I want something bushy and upright .Thinking hot colours but not decided .

Has anyone got any recommendations ?

To me this is the king of the geranium world.

They are often called climbing but they don’t really climb. They just grow very tall if supported properly.

oh wow - how lovely is that Dontswearthelittlestuff . Thank you .

Was just talking to a friend who pointed out that trailing geraniums can be used as climbers if supported .

Never occured to me !

I love pelargoniums but I always manage to kill them in the summer!

I love all thing geranium and pelargonium. And think they are making a bit of a come back after years of people thinking they are an old lady plant😩They thrive on a bit of neglect. Maybe your’s die as you over water? Once a week even in the height of summer is enough with a feed of tomato food every few weeks. Dead head them as soon as the flower goes over and you should have new flower stems all summer.

Ive used P Pink Capricorn (aka Pink Capitatum) in large planters for years. It’s easy, prolific and fills the pot quickly, survives winter in a cold greenhouse. Fragrant foliage too.

@Trethew thank you so much ,that looks ideal !

Though I see Woottons disagrees with RHS and thinks Capricorn and Capitatum are different .

They both look heavenly to me .

I don't have a greenhouse but could probably find somewhere sheltered /improvise .Keeping ventilated while also protected might need some thought .

I love them! I don't have any advice to offer, but I'm looking for some for a patio that only gets sun in the afternoon.

I tend to regard RHS as the last word.

I was talking to the Fibrex people at Hampton Court Show last year and the told me they supplied Sarah Raven with Pink Capricorn but she sold it on as Pink Capitatum
