A climber for a very sunny, south facing wall (help please)

I have planted two new climbers against my south facing front wall, one a jasmine is doing brilliantly, the other, a clematis looks like it’s about to give up!. The clematis is a variety I have never seen before with tiny flowers and almost fluffy leaves (sorry awful description). I am tempted to move it and try again with something else, does anyone have any recommendations for a reasonably fast growing climber which can tolerate full sun? Thank you!

Is the plant that is not doing well at the moment definitely a clematis? They tend to do well in those conditions. The issue may be the depth that you have planted it - they tend to need cool roots so need to be planted a good 5 cm below the soil surface and mulched well.

Honeysuckle could be a good alternative.

Hmmmm now I’m doubting myself, I will try to upload a photo tomorrow (although I’m embarrassed by how sad it looks!)

Could your clematis be Sweet Autumn?

I don’t think so cake....I’m now thinking it might not be one at all! Will post a picture tomorrow

I always put a large stone, or broken terracotta pot over the roots of my clematis. The old saying is ‘roots in the shade, head in the sun’.

A solanum would do really well in that spot. You can get white or purple ones. I bought two purple ones last year, one is planted in an east facing spot, one in a west facing spot. The one in the west facing spot is doing really well. Long flowering, quick to establish. You have to tie it in but that's all.

Thanks welltidy, I think this what is commonly known as the potato vine which I have been looking at. I’m trying to post a photo of the (half dead) maybe clematis

Yes, a potato vine. They’re really easy and would do what you want it to do. Quite cheap too, my local garden centre sells them for about £12. No idea about your clematis though sorry.
