What is this viney thing

Moved into our house last summer in the intense non rainy period so nothing continued to grow much, we have pruned and tidied this spring and now it’s exploded into leaf, lovely. I’ve been weeding and have noticed this vine like plant wrapping around the roses and intwining with some other ones. I don’t know much about some of what is coming out, is this something I should be ripping out as it’s clearly very fast growing and invasive, but is it something that flowers and is supposed to be there?!

Possibly bindweed or ground elder which is more of a bugger.
Put a couple of canes in it. Twine it up the cane then on a still non rainy day. Spray it with something and put a plastic bag over the top. And watch it die, dig up any roots carefully. Leaving none behind.

Bindweed. Don't let it flower or go to seed or you will have more of it. It's quite easy to pull out if you can get to the base of it.

Argh the dreaded bindweed! It’s got beautiful white trumpet flowers but, sadly, by time they come out it will have covered and choked the roses.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/05/2019 12:41

And yes, pull up from the base. It will come back, keep pulling it up, it’s a war of attrition Sad

Bindweed. It’s an absolute bastard. Either pull it out (and keep doing it, because every tiny little bit of root you leave will become another plant) or as someone suggested train it up a couple of canes then spray it with a systemic weed killer like glyphosate. It will still probably come back for a while though.

Ugh I thought it might be a bastard. We had to fight our neighbours Russian vine for a few years in the old garden. Was pleased that we have no fences in common with another garden in this one, but looks like we have our own pest. I’ll go round pulling out what I can, it’s in a few places. Weird we didn’t see it last summer, previous owner must have been very diligent and we are just doing what we can with renovations and two very young kids! Gardens are hard work.

Definitely bindweed! You may not find it east to get rid of, but if you keep pulling it out it shouldn't do too much damage. Every garden has its weeds Im afraid - you can't keep nature down for long!! Grin

I have to accept there will be a certain amount of weeds, not in a position to put in hours a week looking after it, so just a twice weekly quick weed and mow and maybe some more effort on some weekends is what we can manage! It’s a lovely garden, probably more suited to an older couple who love gardening rather than someone with two small boys, but we are trying to keep it nice!

Yeah it's bind weed and it is indeed a bastard. You need to get down to the root, it's like a long white thick thread, any at all left in the ground and it will grow and spread. Like wildfire. And wrap itself around everything and anything.
