What could I plant in this bald patch? (Pic!)

Very novice gardener here...please speak slowly Grin

I have a lovely bed (inherited from the very green-fingered people who previously owned our house) but it has developed a sparse patch.

It's not a problem, but I'd like to fill it in with something nice and I'm not sure what's appropriate. The bed gets sun all day and the soil is quite dry.

Any ideas? Have included some pictures to hopefully give an idea of size and surroundings.

Thanks in advance.

It's quite a broad question to answer without knowing what else is there, the height the other plants grow and of course what you like.

The RHA website has a 'find a plant' search which you may helpful.

English Lavender. Bees love it. It is drought tolerant. It looks so pretty and fluffs up nicely.

Geum Totally Tangerine - filled in some bald patches where I accidentally killed some other plants with this. Beautiful early flowers and grow big enough to be seen over your other plants. Might take them a bit of time to puff up but they're great. Perennial too.

A bit of height would look good there; foxgloves, lupins, hollihocks or delphinium. Or a different leaf shape for contrast and still some height red-hot poker.

@bellinisurge Thanks. I love lavender! I've planted a few recently. I'm worried it might be a bit short and get dwarfed by it's neighbours, though...?

@Minkies11 I love a perennial and those are beautiful. I'll look into them. Thanks.

@Thrupennybrit We have foxgloves in the front beds and they're glorious. Good suggestion, thank you. I've just looked up the other two and they're also lovely. Is it the right time of year to plant them now?

I might try and get to a garden centre tomorrow and have a look.

I would plant something tall, perenial and with dark black or purple foliage to contract with all the green. Something like this perhaps

crophopper · 13/05/2019 19:54

@BigusBumus They're lovely. I like that they're slightly later flowering, too. Yes it is indeed quite green-heavy at the moment but it becomes very bright later in spring / early summer. The peonies and the Salvia next to the bald patch are just starting to come to life now. Very exciting. It's my third summer here and the first one I've actually got to grips with the garden!

If you have a good garden centre near you, I'd simply take your picture and ask a staff member what they think.

I'd second the suggestion for some height, though. Lupins, delphiniums, hollyhocks or verbena bonariensis are amongst my favourites.

What about something tall and evergreen that flowers? Like a jasmine or a tall ceanothus (you can train it on a trellis)?

Euphorbia wulfenii. Looks amazing this time of year and holds its form well. Sprawls to fill in gaps in my garden well.
