What's wrong with my tomato plant?

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 13:56

My cherry tomato plant isn't happy but I don't know why. It looks dehydrated but the soil is moist (not wet) and the brown leaves arent crispy.
It's in a large pot, with a drainage hole, in full sun, I planted it about 3 weeks ago in soil especially for tomatoes and its gradually getting worse.
It's clearly not totally unhappy as it has just sprouted some yellow flowers.

Any thoughts?

Tomato blight :-(

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 14:50

Oh no! I've just read what that is and it seems there's no rescuing it if that's what it is.
So if I replace it with a new plant, will I also need to replace the soil in the pot?

Definitely, blight is fungal, so the spores are probably in the compost.

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 15:01

Would I be able to use the same pot for a new plant?

It might be OK if you give it a good wash but I personally wouldn't risk it, I would use the pot for something else.

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 15:17

Would the tomato blight only affect tomatoes then? Would a cucumber plant be ok in that pot?

Get rid - don't even compost the soil as the spores of the fungus are very persistent and will infect future tomato & potato plants nearby.

Miljah · 11/05/2019 19:01

How disappointing for you ☹️

thislido · 11/05/2019 19:06

You can disinfect the pot.

Some varieties are more blight resistant so that might be worth a try too.

sackrifice · 11/05/2019 19:06

I don't think that is tomato blight. It looks like it got frosted or wind burnt.

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 20:38

More pictures for clarification.
It is a 'sweet aperitif' cherry tomato

I mean it is totally fucked.

Have you left it outside all night and are you in an area that has been frosty?

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 21:42

I bought it as a plant from a garden centre less than a month ago and planted it straight outside in this pot. In that time we have had zero frost. I'm in the Midlands so no extreme temperatures.

I think it has been too cold for tomatoes. I had some outside and have had to bring them inside for a bit. I know there hasn't been frost but it has been really cold.

I think maybe get another one and start again

TheSpottedZebra · 11/05/2019 21:56

Agree with sackrifice - that's frost damage, not blight.

So you can use the compost again, but treat your next tomato a bit more kindly! I'm not quite midlands (a bit morea south than you) , and I've had temps of 3° overnight this week - way too cold for tomatoes to be outside.

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 22:11

I'm (clearly) a beginner here... So if I put a new plant in the pot shall I buy a cover to put over it? I don't have a greenhouse.

You could buy a little plastic covered greenhouse. Just need to ensure it doesn't blow away.Various sizes available

Thank you all so much for your help. Wish me luck with round two!

don't water the leaves in the heat of the sun either. so no hosing this little one between 10am and 6pm.
the water droplets can magnify the suns rays and burn the leaves crispy.

Alabasterangel6 · 11/05/2019 22:55

I’m in the midlands and way too cold to put my tomatoes out yet.

Some of my bedding are on nighttime curfew and coming back inside still. Last night was 2/3c and with windchill is enough to damage. Last Friday/Saturday I had to cover my cosmos and sweet peas overnight as it was properly cold.

longtompot · 11/05/2019 23:03

I'm in the south and we've had frost, so don't rule it out.

StarlitTrees · 11/05/2019 23:18

So as long as I cover it with a plastic greenhouse and make sure to water the soil, not the leaves it should be OK outside?

Am I OK to leave the greenhouse closed all the time or do you have to open the flap in the day?

🍅 are actually warm weather plants and don't grow well( taste great) whengrown in Britain

sackrifice · 12/05/2019 10:03

If you are only growing one tomato plant, it's probably best to keep it indoors for a few more weeks, then harden it off by putting it out for an hour a day, then two, then 4 then all day and then it can go outdoors.

I wouldn't buy a greenhouse, pop up or not, just for one plant. Not when they can go outside in 3 ish weeks time.
