Weed/wildflowers/inherited

Looking for advice.

We bought a house a few years ago, we kept on top of the flower beds and I did wonder a few times if we were digging up inherited bedding plants.

We’ve had a good mix of rain and sun but I’ve not been able to get out until this weekend to sort it all out.

We seem to have a scattering if these tall stems with purple flowers at the top (seem to come up through other plants/bushes.

There is also this blue flower that I’m not sure if it’s a wildflower or a weed (next door has been empty for some time so I’m always battling the weeds that come through from their fence)

Thirdly we have this small purple creeping flower that collects around our front doorstep - could be again an inherited plant.

Any help identifying would be much appreciated.

No help in identifying I’m afraid, but it’s only a weed if you don’t like it!Smile

Post some pictures maybe?

LIZS · 05/05/2019 13:25

BentNeckLady · 05/05/2019 13:25

I love the odd wildflowers that pop up in my garden; I even have a soft spot for my dandelions.

meow1989 · 05/05/2019 13:30

Is it nor aquiligia, forget me not and nemesia?

imsorryiasked · 05/05/2019 13:35

Aquilegia, forget me not and a we'd which we call snap dragons but is possibly ground ivy? Its very pretty and will grow in tiny crevices in walls etc

woman19 · 05/05/2019 13:41

Look beautiful! Ecologically precious, and looks gorgeous. Smile

Beebumble2 · 05/05/2019 15:28

These are all self sown plants that I welcome in my garden. I’ve a self sown aquilegia growing in front of my front door. Everyone has to walk round it.

Owlish · 05/05/2019 16:17

Aquilegia, forget-me-not and ivy-leaved toadflax ( also know as kenilworth ivy). All not weeds but can become weedy, iyswim.

poptypingchef · 05/05/2019 16:39

Amazing thanks - big help! I really want to encourage as many wildflowers to come through as I’ve popped in a beehive and insect homes. We have a lot of purple flowers across the year and last year we had an incredible display or butterfly’s round our lilac bush for weeks.

We have a wild flower garden, anything that self seeds is allowed to grow and we've gained three trees that way. We have a small lawn at the moment but we're thinking of turning that into a wild flower meadow on a very small scale.

florentina1 · 05/05/2019 17:31

I agree Aquilegia and Forget me not, but I think the last one is Viola Papilionacea or creeping violet.

Owlish · 05/05/2019 18:08

@florentina1 Nope, it's definitely ivy-leaved toadflax, it grows like mad in all the cracks in the roads and walls around here.

poptypingchef · 05/05/2019 18:10

@florentina1 yes, when I googled the toadflax it is exactly what we have and is growling like wildfire

I have the first two of those in my garden. I just let them get on with it in amongst the garden centre stuff I have to actually pay for. Neither is hard to get rid of if you ever get sick of them.

florentina1 · 05/05/2019 18:29

I stand corrected. Is it a nice or nuisance plant

Harebellsies · 05/05/2019 18:48

I love toadflax, the little faces are so cute.

poptypingchef · 05/05/2019 19:28

Sorry just realised i tagged the wrong person @florentina1 - really appreciate everyone’s help in identifying these 😀

I like toadflax. It does tend to overrun other plants though so I pull it up from time to time.

floraloctopus · 06/05/2019 08:38

We don't have any toadflax but I like the look of it, I'll have to try and find some.

ppeatfruit · 06/05/2019 12:42

It's so lovely to read the posts that defend the 'weeds'. I' m so concerned about the demise of out natural world that I'm welcoming all my wildflowers with enthusiasm! I love the violets which arrive early in the corners of the terrace and I use ivy as a ground cover, you can just (as has been said) pull up the bits that are in the way of the perrenials that come later like rudbeckia.

Since going organic my garden has become lovelier and is full of birds, bees etc. hardly any slugs or snails because the hedgehogs get them. Love the weeds I say!!!!
