Apple tree pruning help with pics

I think this tree needs some pruning, but I have no idea what to do. Is it too late now? I read spring summer is ok...

It's 11 years old and was moved to a new house when it was 2 years. I've printed it once but it's quite sentimental so I'm always nervous about touching it, although it's so all over the place I think it really needs attention. But I'm pretty clueless! Can anyone help? I've attached pics and a very rubbish drawing!

He's my drawing, might give a better idea of the shape of it. One branch is about 8ft high....

Anyone? Is it too small a job for a proper gardener to do? Poor thing just looks a mess!

Wait until at least July to prune. Trees have low energy at this time due to flowering also apples are vulnerable to silver-leaf at this time.

Not at this time of year basically.
Pruning is best done in the dead of winter.

Yes do not prune it now. It definitely needs some work.

What is the variety?

MrsMaudwatts · 06/05/2019 17:07

Ok, glad I didn't just start hacking at it! I don't know what type it is unfortunately. I bought it in a garden centre but I've long since list the card. The apples are quite big andnot entirely pleasant to eat!

Maudwatts
If they are not a dessert apple, plan ahead to make chutney and apple sauce and pies and turnovers
cooking apples are more versatile in my book

The reason I ask is some apples fruit on the spur and some fruit on the end so if you prune the end bearing type the way you prune a spur bearing type you won't get fruit.

So basically you need to take loads of photos of the fruit and branches this year so that whoever you get to prune it will be able to tell if it is an end bearer or spur bearer.

Brilliant, thank you, that's exactly the sort of advice I need.

It generally has loads of apples but because the branhes are so thin, and the apples tend to get quite big most of them fall off before they're ready so I usually make a crumble with the one or two we get.
