My Clematis isn't flowering yet

I know I am an impatient gardener, but my Clematis (planted last year, it was a small but established plant with some flowers on it when purchased) has not flowered yet and I am wondering if something is wrong? Others in the area have flowered. It is in a spot that gets the morning sun and it has grown tall and green... Any thoughts?

What variety is it? My clematis Montana is in full bloom but my other two varieties aren’t as they always flower after the Montana.

Turquoisetamborine · 05/05/2019 08:33

Also it mightn’t flower in its first year.

ShowOfHands · 05/05/2019 08:35

Everything in my garden is topsy turvy. One clematis isn't flowering yet but it is going to as it's forming buds and I have a buddleia and lilac without flowers too. Meanwhile, 3 daffodils have just appeared...

PleaseJustSayNo · 05/05/2019 08:36

We had a clematis for years, every year it grew a bit and had lovely leaves but never flowered. We thought it was broken. But then flowered last year. Nothing yet this year but 🤞

SolitudeAtAltitude · 05/05/2019 08:38

I have 3 kinds of clematis, non blooming yet

IStillMissBlockbuster · 05/05/2019 08:42

I don't really remember what variety of Clematis it is unfortunately.

Mine isn't flowering yet either but the Montana's around here are looking fabulous.

Lovemusic33 · 05/05/2019 09:34

Mine isn’t flowering yet (purple variety) but it’s new so I’m not getting my hopes up, it is growing pretty fast though.

wowfudge · 05/05/2019 10:19

Our clematis Montana is in bud, but not yet blooming.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 06/05/2019 07:08

Mine doesn't even have any buds. It had flowers on when I bought it but when I planted it, no new flowers grew. Wonder what's wrong.

Possibly needs a feed of miracle grow or tomato feed.

Could be a late summer flowering variety.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 06/05/2019 12:47

I will get the miracle grow on it thank you Sammie

Clematis need a lot of sun ABOVE but need to be dug in deep with maybe a stone over the roots. I had no success with them until I planted them in the full sun in deep mulch type soil. Yes the Montana is fabulous and it's it's first year !! There are differing clems for different times of the year.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 06/05/2019 16:36

Ok. I have watered it with Miracle Grow and piled stones up over the roots - there were some above the soil! Thanks for the tip.

IStill You can also save money by mixing 1\6 coffee and or tea dregs with rain water. and watering\feeding every other week ( more with rain water if it's dry of course) I haven't ever bought stuff, and my plants are happy !

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2019 15:24

As others have said, there's lots of different clematis varieties. I think there's a really early one (Armandii?). Montana is the super-vigorous pink or white one which is out now in many areas (mine is, smells deliciously like vanilla). Then come the larger flowering ones, again variable depending on type and location - some will flower more than once a season, others don't. I've a few of these, some are starting to bud up, others not.

ppeatfruit · 07/05/2019 16:05

Yes Errol my montana smells lovely, it's the first time I've planted one and it's doing exactly what I want it to do; covering up an ugly leylandii that is exposed on it's 'dead' looking side since having it's mate removed ,because it was threatening to swipe our roof off in the next storm!

Gooseysgirl · 07/05/2019 16:17

This is interesting because I was having a conversation with my mum yesterday about clematis... she has a gorgeous one that's been on a wall in her garden for at least 20 years, each year more stunning than the last BUT this year she said it hasn't done well at all. We inherited one in the garden of the house we bough 5 years ago, and it's also not doing as well as previous years... weather related?? Both are Montana variety...

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2019 16:26

Maybe they got very dry last summer? (And it's been quite dry this spring I think). Do they get pruned? - I have mine a massive chop last year immediately after flowering.

ppeatfruit · 07/05/2019 16:52

I've been feeding mine quite a bit. To settle it in. Maybe it was just dry at the wrong time, for your mum's. Goosey

I'll remember to do that Errol

userxx · 07/05/2019 17:39

Mine is getting tall and bushy but no sign of flowers yet, I only flower last year but it was newly planted.

horizontalis · 08/05/2019 14:49

Some of them are summer-flowering and flower on the current year's growth so they will only be starting to develop shoots that will have the buds on.

When you buy plants from the garden centre, they will usually have been forced into bloom early by being kept in greenhouses, probably in Holland, and then shipped over here.

ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 14:56

Yes that's true horizontal It annoys me. My pear tree fruited heavily in the first year and is not so happy now, I'm giving it time to get used to a normal garden Grin I know I should have removed the pears initially but they were lovely and I couldn't bring myself to do it !

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/05/2019 15:10

Everything I plant, particularly clematis, has a label discreetly tucked in beside it. Plant name, approximate flowering season and colour. They fade, so even this isn't foolproof, but it helps.

I've lost count of the number of clematis plants I have planted then had no idea where they were or what they were supposed to look like!

ErrolTheDragon · 08/05/2019 16:23

I wish I could remember to keep track of what I've got where, and specifically note what to prune when.
