Climbing and rambling roses

We have a wall and fence on which we want to put a rose or two. We have planted some shrubs in front, it gets masses of sun at one end and some shade at the other. Prefer strong colours, scent always good.

I am a rose ignoramus, so all thoughts welcome

Look up Rosa Banksia "Lutea".

I've just bought a climbing rose from David Austin called Etoile de Hollande - strong scent and deep red. Can't wait to see how it does!

If you like deep yellow then the Climber Graham Thomas is a very reliable rose. Avoid Veilchemblau. In the photos it looks a really deep blue, but it fades to a horrible greyish colour.
Good reds are Paul’s Scarlet, Tess of the D’urbevilles and Danse du Fe. For a big impact I would do contrasts, like a red rose with a white or a yellow with a deep orange. I have graham Thomas growing with Princess Anne, bright yellow with deep damson. Princes Anne is a shrub rose but very reliable and highly scented. I let it grow quite tall.

Have fun choosing! The amount of ohoices can be bewildering though. A key thing to keep in mind is that ramblers flower profusely but only once a year, whereas climbers will be more likely to give you repeat flushes of flowers. Ramblers can also be very vigorous which is great if you have masses of wall to cover, or a tree you want it to grow up , but if space is an issue you might be better with a climber.

I think scent is essential and I have a relatively small space so chose one of these and I've been really pleased with it. www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/english-roses/english-rose-climbers It's forgiving of my fairly basic gardening skills, it's put up lots of stems and grown really strongly but hasn't bust out of its available space, it's flowered profusely every year and it smells gorgeous. I went for "The Generous Gardener" as I'm mostly in the garden in the evening so wanted pale colours that show up in the dusk but there are some lovely stronger colours there which might fit your bill?
