What's up with my rose?

Ivegotthree · 25/04/2019 06:43

I'm no gardener but this rose is a couple of years old and has done well in a large pot.

But it's not looking great with these patches on its leaves.

Does anyone know what's up and how I can help it?

Thank you

Looks like black spot to me, you might need to try a fungicide.

I have found that my potted roses were more susceptible to it, I think just through stress, lack of watering on my part- any chance you can get it into the ground?

I had a couple in pots last year and watered them a lot almost every day through summer and now I've had chance to get them in the ground, they are thriving.

You get get good black spot spray. Remove all the infected leaves also.

Agree this looks like black spot. Remove any diseased leaves and dispose of them carefully (don't put on compost heap or disease may spread!) Then spray with fungicide - I've always found Rose Clear pretty effective - and make sure to give rose lots of tlc from now on. As others have said roses - particularly roses in tubs - are more susceptible to disease when they dry out, so give lots of water and make sure to keep soil moist. I also tend to water mine (full can each!) once a day, sometimes even more on very hot days.

And if of the diseased leaves have fallen onto the soil in the pot, make sure to remove them and perhaps scrape off the top layer of soil and replace with fresh compost to get rid of any spores.

Gosh thank you all so much! This is so helpful. I shall google black spot spray right now, thank you!

Annoyingly I am limited to pots, but will do all the tips you suggest and see how I get on.

Thank you.

Don't worry too much. Nearly all roses get black spot to some degree. It is unlikely to kill it unless it is really badly affected.

Also a couple of cloves of garlic in around the roots will act as an antifungal. I also boil garlic in water and put it in a sprayer and spray roses early in the season to delay black spot.

Black spot is often caused by lack of air circulating around the plant. If you don’t want to pollute the air with more chemicals or buying another plastic bottle there is another way. Clear away the infected leaves and then cut around the Rose so that air can circulate. Keep an eye on it and if you see any crowding prune it away.

Thanks guys. I will get busy with the garlic tomorrow!
