Are my tomato plants beyond saving ? Please help🍅 😕

They were doing ok until the other day...

I added some more compost as they looked like there wasn’t enough in the pots, and they’ve looked ill ever since.
It was peat free compost though. Would that have been it?
Or was I overwatering them anyway before I put more compost in?
Can they be saved, and if so, how?

I think they have had it sorry. Possibly over watering.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/04/2019 20:27

I’ve had some like that and put them to one side of the balcony with the intention of throwing them out. After a couple of weeks of neglect some did actually sprout back!

curtaintrail · 24/04/2019 20:30

This looks like shock to me - either too cold or too hot once repotted. Did you repot and put them somewhere sunny as sometimes it's all too much in a short space of time.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 24/04/2019 20:34

Hmmm, I put them in the very warm conservatory after repotting.

That must be it. Oh dear.

I think I’ll keep them in the even temperature kitchen for now and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help.

Can you take some better photos? Closer, in focus with some light?

The soil looks dry not wet.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 24/04/2019 22:06

I’ll try tomorrow with some more photos.
The soil is dry as I’ve dared not water them again thinking I have over watered them already.

Put them into a tray of water and let them soak up what they want for 15 mins. Then take them out.

If I could see it better, I'd be inclined to suspect Aminopyralid in the compost which makes the plant curl as it stops it taking up nutrients, or a too strong compost; ie where the manure hasn't rotted down enough - but you'd have noticed a pungent smell [really bad] if that was the case.

Better photos would help though. they do look dry.

Did you just add compost to the top, or did you repot into larger pots?

Chocolateandabook2019 · 24/04/2019 22:15

I added compost to the top rather than report into larger pots @ sackrifice.

I’ll try the water tomorrow, thanks, that’s a good idea.

Would it be better to repot altogether in larger pots?

OP posts:
sackrifice · 24/04/2019 22:48

I'd check that it isn't the compost first. But yes, id repot into larger pots as the roots fill the pot otherwise they grow in circles and get pot bound.

Can you give them a little water tonight?

Chocolateandabook2019 · 25/04/2019 13:45

Hi, I’m back.
I’ve stood them in water as advised @sackrifice for 15 mins, but I’ve ran out of compost so I am going out to buy more, and repot into bigger pots.

Here are more photos.
Not looking good, are they?

Sorry, I think they've had it. Sad

Titsywoo · 25/04/2019 15:16

This exact thing happened to mine 2 weeks ago when I left them outside one night and it was too cold. I brought them inside and left them in a room that was about 10-12 degrees. Watered them loads. After a week they started sprouting again. I cut off the side shoots and the dead bits and they seem to be recovering.

Miljah · 25/04/2019 15:24

That sounds encouraging, Titsy- that would be worth a go, I reckon!

Chocolateandabook2019 · 25/04/2019 15:58

Thanks, that does sound encouraging @Titsywoo.

I left them in water for 15 mins as advised and then took them out.

I’ve also moved them back into the back bedroom where they originally started from seed (when they looked healthy....). That’s 10-12 degrees at the moment.
I’ll cut off the dead bits too and side shoots.
Tomorrow when I get my car back, I’m going to buy fresh compost and repot.
Two of the plants look like they are coming back to life (a bit) already.
Keep your fingers crossed please.

Thanks for your advice, all of you.
I’ll update soon, hopefully with healthy tomato plant pics.

They need water and sunlight and some warmth. When you re-pot them use deep pots and bury the stems to the first leaves.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 25/04/2019 16:04

Thanks @HardAsSnails, I will

Argh, posted too soon.

They are looking much better, plus I’ve cut off the side straggly bits.

Dh is bringing me some fresh compost (with added John Innes) home from work (he gets a discount on it) so I can pot into bigger pots later.

Thanks for your help and advice. I’m glad I posted now, I was ready to throw them out.

Phew!

sackrifice · 26/04/2019 22:38

I found some plants [still unidentified at the moment] when I was putting some bad weeds into someone's brown bin for them, they had been in there for days and were on the cusp; I took them home, forgot about them until the next day [one of those hot Easter days last weekend], bunged them in a trug with water in and I've left them there.

They perked up so well, I'm going to pot them up and take them back to the person who binned them. Silly buggers.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 27/04/2019 12:22

Brilliant! Good job you spotted those plants in the bin @sackrifice.

A lesson learnt. If in doubt, don’t throw out. Stick ‘em in water 😄.

Exactly, unless they are sopping in which case put them somewhere dry and warm. On top of an old teatowel to soak up the water if necessary.
