I'm so excited, after several years of having a single frog in my small (

How lovely! We built a pond last year but I am still waiting for frogs to take up residence.

bellinisurge · 23/04/2019 21:35

Hurray! Photos if you can. Well done for giving them somewhere cool to hang out. And for being patient.

Love it. Was delighted to find frogspawn in our little pond last week so hoping for the splash of tiny froglets in near future.

Doggydoggydoggy · 23/04/2019 21:50

That’s lovely.
I have newts in mine.

Apparently it tends to be one or the other from what I’ve heard.

didireallysaythat · 24/04/2019 01:47

@doggydoggydoggy it's probably too late this year but put some of the frogspawn in a bucket in your pond with the top above the water line. That way the frogs won't eat all of the eggs. When the tadpoles start to hatch you can tip it in.

We refilled our pond after it dried out last year and we have at least 5 medium sized frogs, I haven't seen the two enormous frogs fit a month or so and we have at least two types of newts, and newt eggs too. All from nothing in < 3 months (but we did have frogs and newts last year so they must have found alternative lodgings....)

My pond isn’t doing great but I do have lots of hedgehogs!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 24/04/2019 15:11

Yay hedgehogs!

My frogs aren't very sociable, they tend to hang out underwater rather than sitting decoratively on lily pads Grin

Fortunately my oxygenators have done their job and the water's quite clear so I can see them on occasion. They have lots of pebbles, ramps and plants to hide out amongst in case a passing bird takes a fancy.
The cat's mesmerised but he seems to leave them to their own devices. I caught him lolloping across the lawn in hot pursuit one time but he's behaved himself since.

I've never had frogspawn/ tadpoles (I don't even know what frogspawn looks like - jelly?!) Lots of pointy pond snails!

I quite fancy a second, connected pond but I have so many more pressing jobs in the house and garden! I've set up a couple of mini ponds (buckets) around the place.

Lovely to hear of everyone's pond/frog/newt successes Smile

We have great crested newts in our garden, but no pond and no neighbours have one either. We made them a little splash pool last summer in the heat, after an hour there was a giant toad in it! I want to like them but they give me the heebie-jeebies (sorry to the amphibian lovers)

Doggydoggydoggy · 24/04/2019 16:24

Great crested newts are a rare and protected species.
That’s amazing you have them!

Thatsnotmyotter · 24/04/2019 16:26

We have one frog I think... definitely was two but I’ve only seen one recently! The fish ate all the tadpoles 😬

We’re overrun with slowworms in our garden though so definitely doing quite well on the wildlife front!

I know, we had quite a few last year living under a patio that we lifted. Several of them were deformed, they had only 3 legs (not injured, they just only had 3 legs!).
