Small Tree/Large Shrub for Urban Community Garden.

Does anyone have any ideas for a Small Tree/Large Shrub to be planted in large containers at the front of a south-facing building?
Ideally:
-year round interest
-airy as they will be either side of a bay window so don't want to block too much light
-easy to maintain, happy to prune to keep in shape
-native or naturalised as we are creating wildflower/pollinator friendly spaces
-not too expensive

I like ilex/Holly trained as standard lollipop shape.

Does anyone think hawthorn/blackthorn/guelder Rose might work as we have access to some of those?
Or a flame coloured dogwood?

Spiky so not so easy to cart away too 😉😊

Guelder Rose, lovely scent.

Bees love Guelder rose too so it's a win-win

I dint see why not. By miniature do you mean in length or with small plants?
Monty Don has often mentioned small slow growing shrubs to edge areas of his gardens.

Our theme is wild and native plants so it would be perfect!

Amelanchier, beautiful blossom, spring and autumn foliage colour, berries, smallish, graceful shape. Different varieties have slightly different growing habits.

Yes go for a mini hedge. I grow all sorts in containers, small trees, bamboo, palms, Hydrangeas. If they get too big and you’ve no space pass them onto someone with more room.

I thought I would update you
We have about 15 shrubs growing in small containers at the moment.
Guelder rose, hawthorn, blackthorn, dog rose.
They will form our hedge when we transplant them into larger containers.

We still haven't decided about the trees for the front.
Salix Kilmarnock and Acer palmatum are current favourites

I need to decide overnight!
