Do I need to give up with this tree?

When we bought our house it had a very mature overgrown garden. We are now trying to sort it out but I'm not very green fingered so it's a bit of a challenge Blush

We have two bushes/tress in our garden which I really like but one is nice and green while the other is brown. I'm thinking I need to cut it right back and then it might grow back healthy but my dh thinks it can't be saved and we just need to get rid of it. Anyone know if I can save it? Thanks

I can’t make out what it is from the photo, but you could cut it down to about 30 cms and see what happens, some trees rejuvenate from the base.

Gorgeous view! Why obscure it with heavy evergreen trees?
I'd get rid of it. They rarely grow back once they're browned inside.
They grow very quickly - you could but something nicer / brighter / more interesting in its place, or go for something like a blossom or fruit tree, or a rowan (which has lovely berries in autumn).

The evergreen won't grow back. The red one, Photinia will cope with being cut back and will have better red foliage the following year after. Don't cut back every year though just when you feel it's getting too big.

Hard to see the foliage but looks like a conifer. If so get rid of it.

The brown one looks like a Leyland cypress or lawson cypress and won't grow from brown areas. Unless it's a Thuja which would grow back. Thuja have pineapple scented 'leaves'/ scales when crushed.
