Flowers for deep shade?

Preferably perennial!

Astilbe?

billybagpuss · 14/04/2019 11:19

There’s not too many actual flowers. Astilbes aren’t too bad with shade, hosta love it but beware the slugs. Busy Lizzie are good in shade if you want some colour but they are not perennial. There are a few roses that cope but they don’t like it very much.

Oh and bulbs eg bluebells. Very pretty.

Tofslan · 14/04/2019 11:25

I have some Epimedium in a shady patch of my garden - they’ve just come out and are looking very pretty. They are in front of a north facing wall and under some trees, although it does get a little light.

Doggydoggydoggy · 14/04/2019 11:27

Yes I am considering Astilbe...

I have a lovely red one by my pond with some Hostas.

I love bluebells but Spring is already sorted with miniature narcissi and muscari so no room for anymore bulbs

Also Trillium?

MairzyDoats · 14/04/2019 11:28

Astrantia are happy in shade, as are geranium phaeum...or you could try ferns, although obviously no flowers. How deep is the shade? No sun ever?

Doggydoggydoggy · 14/04/2019 11:29

The spot is pretty much full shade, the fence is going to be painted bright white to try and maximise light but it’s overshadowed by lots of mature trees so super cool and shady.

My DH tries to keep the trees trimmed back pretty much level with the fence, it does get a little sunshine but not much

Perennial geraniums apparently.

I have an east facing garden with a North facing bed which is an absolute ballache as I love colour.

Fortunately my best mate is a gardener and she's recommended the geraniums and foxgloves (if you don't have outdoor pets/small kids - they're very poisonous). Also Mahonia and hostas which are a large leafed shrub rather than flowers but come in some amazing colours and patterns. You will need to slug proof though as they love hostas.

If you have the money you can buy a ready planned 'shady border' plant kit here from Homebase for £150.

Or a smaller scale, cheaper option from Jersey plants direct.

I'm also planning to cheat by planting some more colourful, less shade friendly plants in tubs and move them around so they get the sun, but plonk them back in the border if I want a bit of colour on that side of the garden when I have people round.

Doggydoggydoggy · 14/04/2019 11:40

I like Hostas but I’m not sure Hosta is what I am looking for for that part of the garden, foxgloves I love but that’s a definate no no as I have both children and animals.

Will look into the other suggestions

I have an area of my garden like this. Hellebores are beautiful and thrive there - lovely evergreen leaves and early spring flowers. Astrantia. Geranium phaeum (small dark purple flowers). Vinca minor. I have a hydrangea in a pot which seems to manage ok but I do need to water it a lot.

prettywhiteguitar · 14/04/2019 11:48

Hydrangeas!

Knittedfairies · 14/04/2019 11:53

All of the above; some ideas here too.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 14/04/2019 12:10

Tricyrtis formosana Commonly known as toad lily.
Perennial clump forming, happy in full shade or partial. Grows to about 70 to 80 cm tall and comes in several different varieties and colours.

MintyCedric · 14/04/2019 13:12

Knittedfairies that website is brilliant!

MairzyDoats · 14/04/2019 15:31

Oh yeah, tiarella for colour!

viccat · 14/04/2019 15:54

Not hellebores as mentioned above, they are really toxic to pets and apparently humans too.

I have beacon silver lamium in a shady corner and it's thriving. It's more a groundcover plant though, so not good if you're looking for height. Nice white/green foliage and purple flowers though. I also have astilbe.

Ohyesiam · 14/04/2019 15:57

I have white dicentra ( can’t think of the new name, aka bleeding hearts) in deep shade, and I love them.
Also driopteris fern and cyclamen.

WellTidy · 14/04/2019 17:18

Aquilegia (green apples is lovely), cranesbill geraniums and star magnolia all do well in shade in my garden.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 15/04/2019 06:51

My tiarellas are very happy in shade, as is my rhododendron, hellebores and various foxgloves
