Strange request I know, am looking for ways to make the fence my neighbours next door put up look more interesting.
It's a Big 6 foot fence and we have the outside view. My neighbours have bushes already in place so the fence isn't so big and stark at their side, but we only have pebbles on our side and it's a bit glaringly bare looking. It's great for privacy but needs something on it etc.
Any pics would be great I'm not good at gardening and don't want to wait years till something climbs up it.
Many thanks.

No pics I'm afraid, but how about:

Long string of solar powered fairy lights
Garden art / mirror
Grape vines grow at a heck of a rate in one summer ...
Sunflowers

I had thought of fairy lights but I don't know if that would be enough.

Try posting in the Home and Garden threads... likely to get more replies I would think Smile

Will your neighbors allow you to drill holes into it to insert vine eyes and wires ? Then you can grow some nice climbers.

Plants like clematis and roses will take a couple of years to cover it. But you can grow annual climbers like sweet peas in the meantime .

I think attaching a trellis would be OK.

So you need to move the pebbles to create a border next to the fence. Is there decent topsoil underneath ?

Look on Pinterest for photos and post a couple here, so we can see the styles you like .

Not sure about the topsoil, I was thinking of buying some planters to hold maybe a couple of clematis?

Travis Perkins have square trellis that's 6 foot exactly and cheap.
It seems pretty robust so far.
We got some climbing plants to trail up it for 1.99 from b and m. Honeysuckle, passiflora type of thing.
It could easily accommodate fairy lights or bunting.

Thanks for that.

Just keep in mind that if the fence belongs to them you need their permission to attach things like trellis to it. I would put some nice large plants/ shrubs against it for instant impact and to break it up a bit.

INeedNewShoes · 07/04/2019 13:49

I planted a Clematis against my fence two years ago and have encouraged it to grow along the length of the fence which is now nearly has (so 3 full sized fence panels in 2 years). It's only running along the top though.

I would put some posts in to hold up the trellis rather than leaning it on their wall. Not a huge job. Postcrete is amazing stuff.

I would put trellis from your side and grow plants up it. There are literally dozens of options. Try to include evergreen or winter plants too. You can get books called titles like "climbers and wall shrubs" which should give you plenty of ideas.

That said, the quickest way I covered an ugly fence was to put up vines eyes (nails with holes in) on my side, and stretched wires between then, then added a busy and fast growing climbing rose with a variety of clematis. It wasn't evergreen, but in southern parts of the country it might be.

You can get loads of advice online for climbers for all seasons and which direction your fence faces. Some are great for wildlife -insects,birds like wrens whose numbers are plummeting. Fairy lights may be pretty but only at night and there are huge concerns about the confusion and impact caused wildlife etc by light pollution.Sorry it's a bug bear of mine !But honestly some lovely climbers will be much prettier year round interest. And some are scented if the fence is near a seating are.Honeysuckle and jasmine for example. And very easy to grow.Ours have really taken off relatively quickly.
