I've been watching the Great British Garden Revival on the BBC.

Can anyone tell what plant is the one with purple flowers in this shot? It's about 4 minutes in the programme.

Is it a type of sage? Looks really good, have been looking for something like it to go in a sunny border.

I think it's a peony.

bilbodog · 01/04/2019 17:15

Could it be a type of salvia? The peony is the pink one.

Purple toadflax? I've got it in my garden; it self-seeds everywhere and some people call it a weed, but I like it.

Purple loosetrife?

Beebumble2 · 01/04/2019 17:27

I think it’s Toadflax, as well. I also like it’s self seeing habit because it finds justtne right gap to grown in. I’ve some in the large planters of Bamboo. It looks great, but I bet if I’d planted it there it wouldn’t have grown.

I think it is Russian Sage.

Thanks all, I will look those up. I'd rather not have self seeders, I don't have a lot of room.

Sorry B2B, I meant the purple spiky flowers.

Btw everything in that garden looked amazing, that part of the show was about old roses.

It is Linaria purpurea - purple toadflax - and is a native species. Very pretty, we have some. Seeds itself about, too. There is a pink variety too, called Canon Went.

yamadori · 02/04/2019 15:03

Although it self-seeds it is shallow rooted and pulls up easily.

All of the ones in my garden have decided where they want to be, and I leave them to it Smile

Knittedfairies · 02/04/2019 15:12

Don't let the self-seeding aspect put you off; it's very pretty and, as Yamadori says, easy to hoick out if it puts itself somewhere you don't want it to be.

I’ve just watched the programme, thanks for highlighting it.
It’s definitely purple toadflax and can be seen more closely in other shots.
I agree with others, easily removed from unwanted spots, especially as it has very distinctive young growth.
In the programme boarders they’ve obviously left it growing where it is most effective. I would imagine they also removed the unwanted plants.
