Plants suitable for the shade

Hoping for some help and recommendations.

We have a sloping area behind our house which is basically in the shade all day. Its currently just covered in ivy and the odd spikey plant and a bit of a mess. And its a bit of a rockery.

I am hoping to try and clear it this summer and add some low maintenance shrubs, and grasses or similar. They need to be frost hardy as it gets cold here in winter.

Any ideas where to start?

I'm sorry I can't make a link, but if you go a bit further back on the board there's a fab 'shady characters' thread with tons of info.

We recently planted dogwood which seems to be growing well in the shade

THE thread called “shady characters - a permanent home for shade garden suggestions” has loads of brilliant advice. I bumped it a month or so back, it is still here somewhere. Star magnolia does well in shade.

Excellent, I will hunt that thread out and take a look

Skimmia, heucheras, hydrangea (petiolaris if you want a climber), Fatsia japonica, box, liriope muscari, Japanese anemone honorine Jobert for beautiful white flowers that stand out in the darkness. Astilbe is great if you’re able to keep it moist. To name but a few!!
