Thankyou

What sort of things do you have in mind?

Do you have land or would you prefer pots?

Don't grow things you don't like to eat. Courgettes are really easy but I hate them.

I think the easiest things to start with are Tomatoes you can do in pots you can also do lettuce and similar in pots, also runner beans but make it a very big pot and don't put more than 3 or 4 plants in, but beans are a very economical one to do if you have some proper land.

Root vegetables can be more problematic as they are easier for slugs and things to get to. Potatoes can be grown in a potato sack, but carrots I have mixed success with and parsnips once they've germinated are brilliant but they can be very stubborn.

This week my mum has put in peas, beans, tomatoes and courgettes. All grow well without too much input from her. I think she's doing salad leaves later this week.

I like courgettes so that might be a good place to start think I'm going to buy a couple of already germinated plants to make it easier to start x

Fruit is very easy. Rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries, black currant and gooseberries. Pop them in, water well and they’ll grow. Plum and apple trees are great if you’ve got space.

They need netting from birds, but I only net my strawberries.

You could sow some beetroot and spinach now. Bit early for courgettes. It’s easier to grow stuff in the ground as it needs less watering than in pots.

Courgettes are really easy, you only need a couple plants to get a good crop, Lidl’s have round courgette seeds which I’m trying this year.

The things I find easiest to grow are runner beans, peas, courgettes and potatoes, I plant potatoes in the potato bags you can buy (wilkonsons sell them). Runner beans always produce a good crop if you have space for them, they climb quite high.

Rhubarb is great but can take a year or so to establish, I’m on year 2 with mine and didn’t get much out of it last year. Strawberries are pretty easy but again you might not get a good crop for a year or 2.

Lettuce is easy, runner beans or in fact any beans.

Courgettes - a couple of plants only is enough for most families. I had good success with squash last year.

It's fun! Enjoy it. And only grow stuff you like to eat!!

My favourite stuff to grow is the stuff that comes back every year. So I have: an apricot tree, strawberries, raspberries, blue berries, gooseberries, fennel, a grape vine, a peach tree, wild garlic, an apple tree, a plum tree, rhubarb, blackcurrants, globe artichokes, rosemary, mint, feverfew, and cob nuts.

Then I only plant tomatoes: tumbling and Bush, cucumbers, courgettes, peas, Lettuce, squash, beetroot, spring onions and things like that in the veg patch. I've had varying success with cauliflowers, aubergines, cabbages, onions, pak choi.

This year I'm going for it and just planting as many different crops as I can!

Oh and I do tender herbs too. Basil, coriander, dill, whatever seeds I can get and that will germinate.

I know very little about it all but each year I learn more. I just started by giving things a go. Its the one thing I do that makes me truly happy!
