Want to plant a tree in my boring new build garden. I know very little about gardening so it needs to be something fairly low maintenance. Also can’t have a huge root span or be too tall and imposing as it’s going to be fairly close to the house. Would also like one that flowers to brighten the garden up.

Any suggestions?

If you're not bothered about edible fruit then I'd go for a small sorbus like this one: www.ornamental-trees.co.uk/sorbus-joseph-rock-tree-p309. They give you something nearly all year round and are low maintenance. Make sure you buy a variety which won't grow too big - some grow larger than others.

I'd go for a flowering cherry. One with lovely bark. Here's some. www.ornamental-trees.co.uk/small-garden-flowering-cherry-blossom-trees-c157

Or a smaller variety magnolia. This page has lots of info on trees for smaller gardens, including some magnolias. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=117

Or a crab apple - this one's called 'Laura'.

My vote would be for Sorbus Cashmiria or a dwarf Robinia. Second choice would be one of the 100s of ornamental cherry trees.
