I have just moved in to a new home and the garden needs serious weeding! Can anyone tell me if this is a keeper or a weed?

Are there lots? I would say some sort of aster at first glance

Geneticsbunny · 30/03/2019 19:20

Could be a euphorbia

PetuliaBlavatsky · 30/03/2019 19:24

Looks very weird - what sort of size is it?
The leaves at the top look a little like a euphorbia we had a while back with long spear shaped leaves. I never saw it come up as a shoot though.

My general rule is, if it's growing well and fast, it's usually a weed!

elephantoverthehill · 30/03/2019 19:24

No idea about the main two but I did spot a strawberry in picture 2.

Trethew · 30/03/2019 19:28

Some sort of Euphorbia

TheRhythmlessMan · 30/03/2019 19:32

I'd vote euphorbia too. But the first picture looks like asparagus!

Renovirgin2018 · 30/03/2019 19:43

@elephantoverthehill strawberry???

Thanks everyone. There are probably 6 of them randomly spread out. One right next to the paving - I can't imagine it would have been planted in that spot. I guess I shouldn't dig it up yet, just wait and see what happens.

Renovirgin2018 · 30/03/2019 19:44

@elephantoverthehill currently about 10cm tall.

Renovirgin2018 · 30/03/2019 19:45

Sorry that was meant for @PetuliaBlavatsky

Sorry strawberry plant in the picture but not the plant in question.

wohmum · 30/03/2019 19:52

I’d definitely leave it. Doesn’t look like a weed to me.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 30/03/2019 19:57

Poss something like this one?

I'm wondering if they are lilies. I'd leave them to see what develops, you can always did them up later if they turn out to be triffids.

Knittedfairies · 30/03/2019 20:12

I'm thinking euphorbia too. If it is, handle it with gloves because the sap can cause irritation.

Knittedfairies · 30/03/2019 20:13

... and they spread like nobody's business; I've got some coming up through a gap in the path.

toothgenie · 30/03/2019 20:30

I thought Lillies too.

NanTheWiser · 30/03/2019 21:38

That's a Euphorbia, and possibly E. lathyris aka caper spurge. These are notorious for suddenly popping up out of nowhere, they have explosive seed capsules which shoot the seeds a fair distance. It is considered a weed, although some people grow it for its reputation as a mole deterrent.
I may be wrong of course...

Renovirgin2018 · 31/03/2019 15:58

I accidentally dug one up. There seems to be a huge root system going off in all directions. Does it still sound like a Euphorbia @NanTheWiser @Knittedfairies @TheRhythmlessMan @PetuliaBlavatsky @Geneticsbunny? And if so is it something I should keep or did up?

I'm still thinking it's a euphorbia of some kind having seen the root. They can be very invasive - and hard to get rid of. I think I would hoick them all out, but put one in a deep pot to see what it turns into. If you like it, you can re-plant it.

PurpleWithRed · 31/03/2019 23:27

Ok I was dithering between lily and eophorbia but that’s deffo not a lily bulb so I’m with euphorbia. Knitted fairies advice is 👍👍👍

Renovirgin2018 · 01/04/2019 06:26

Exellent thinking @Knittedfairies
