I'd like to have table and chairs and I like birds. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Which way does the sun go? You'll want your table and chairs in the sun.

What else do you want to (or need to) keep?

At the far end I'd put 2 small trees, eg an amelanchier 'Robin Hill' and a Pyrus Chanticleer, and some nice shrubs with lovely blossom.

Along the sides put trellis and grow climbers, if you fix the trellis a couple of inches away from the fence you may get wrens who love to creep along behind it.

That shed looks big for the garden, maybe you could manage with one half the size?

Do you intend to keep the bark chipping area or will you be planting it?
A small wildlife pond will attract birds and other lovely creatures.

I really like this book for small garden design

how big is your budget?

I second the idea of trees and climbers. plus something evergreen like a small holly or camellia so it is not so bare in the winter.

If you stand at the back door - where the photo is taken you are looking west. I'm happy to get rid of the bark area. The far back fence has gate access.

Have a look on Pinterest, searching small gardens.
Small gardens look larger and more interesting if you can’t see all the way to the end. So staggering planting and twisting paths are a good idea that allow you to come across areas of interest such as a small water feature, seat or rockery.
All year interest with evergreens, bulbs, flowering shrubs and varying heights.

I second a small rockery, perhaps in front of the shed, still can have trellis climbers up the fence. I have pots of bulbs among the borders at this time of year, then just dry them out after flowering and do the same again next year

@8mileeminem I'm in the same boat Smile
Take lots of photos of it at different times of day to see where the light/shade falls?
How lovely to have a west facing garden!
Looks like a good book @MrsAird, I got a couple by Alan Titchmarsh they were ok.. I may invest Grin
