I love these but can't decide where to put them. I should have a suitable border for some next spring, but I have some in a pot that need planting now. How do they fare in grass? We have a fairly wild area with lots of primroses, which doesn't get mown until late spring : would they naturalise up there? Or will the grass defeat them?

I grow mine in quite poor soil, in the shadow of a large Bay tree. I once tried them in a grassy area, but the vanished the next year.

I have loads I put in where we have some quite big trees and the soil isn't brilliant, they multiply every year, one of my favourite flowers.

They seem quite temperamental, I've tried growing them several times in different places in the garden, and they've all kicked the bucket after one season.

whats the best conditions and soil for these?

they intrigue me!

I know, they are such enticingly odd.

Mine are still in their pot, although I need to go check they remain upright.

So far I am getting that they like it shady and a bit rubbish. Hmmm.

The ones I had in our last house were fab. This house not so good.
I think they thrive in poor soil where they compete for ‘stuff’ (technical term). So under trees / near larger shrubs.

They are beautiful.

Susceptible to Lilly beetle though (although lilly beetle are quite spectacular creatures).

so interesting. saw some in b and q, wish i'd bought some now.....plenty of poor soil here

Mine are under birch and rowan trees growing in grass. If it weren't dark right now I'd go and take a picture.
I have seen them in Sweden in the wild and that was in a flower meadow with no trees.

Love them
We have them in our "wild meadow" well, a meadow we seeded 10 years ago with a mix of native seeds
I didnt think they would take but oh boy do they cheer me up. Lovely little things OP
