brightening up a verge

I have noticed several neighbours planting daffodils and primroses in the verge outside their houses which looks fab, and I shall be doing the same for a bit of colour.
I was wondering what could come next?
Its a grass verge that we must maintain so technically belongs to highways. Trees and anything that could obstruct the view is out. We also need to cut the grass

We have a post and rail fence with a hedge immediately the other side so I could add pots to the fence.
Any other ideas?

Is the bit you mean grassy? If so, realistically you won't want flowers there after April as you will need to mow it.

Our front garden has snowdrops, crocus, and chionodoxa growing in it, there's always a crappy bit where the chionodoxa has gone over, but I can't mow because the leaves need more time to feed the bulbs.

The small tulips (I think they were called Tulipa when I bought them a couple of years ago). They are gorgeous. www.sarahraven.com/flowers/bulbs/bulbs_for_naturalising/tulips_to_naturalise_collection.htm

Hi MrsBertBibby Yes, it is the grass bit.

I was asking my neighbour how she gets around the cutting of the grass and she is planning to strimmer it. If I did the same I'd either need to remove the grass totally where any plants are or need plants that can grow in the grass and I have a 'meadow' type effect.
I'm just concerned really the grass may take over and look messy

Well a meadow effect will definitely look messy!

I should tbh stick to early Spring bulbs and primrose. Grass is pretty rough, and it is difficult to get garden plants to compete with it, so unless you clear and keep clear significant patches, you will be fighting a losing battle.

I guess I may either need some pots on the fence or wait and see what my neighbors do and copy them again!!
I'll soon be 'that person' with no original ideas of my own, watch out for a post bemoaning the neighbor who copies!!!

Heh, copying what works next door is a pretty canny idea in gardening!
