Too late to prune wisteria ?

Just that, really - I was afraid to prune it before now in case of frost damage but google is telling me it’s now too late. I have loads of whippy shoots left on it (see pic) a would it be ok to snip some of them ? It flowered for the first time last year (after 4 years) so don’t want to hinder it this year if possible.

Too late to prune wisteria ?

I have just pruned mine right back and think I have killed it gutted

Trethew · 26/02/2019 08:55

It’s still Feb. Not too late to prune it

Our neighbours have a wisteria which comes into our garden.
I prune it all year round on our side and it's still alive!!
It is beautiful when it flowers.

We pruned ours on Sunday so I don't think it's too late.

Pywife2 · 26/02/2019 21:55

I hope not, DH went out and decimated ours yesterday.

JellySlice · 26/02/2019 21:58

Oh good! I prune in July, but keep forgetting the second pruning, so it mine hasn't flowered again since I bought it Sad

I shall do it tomorrow.

quirkychick · 26/02/2019 22:01

I hope not, I did mine today!

FrostedSnowdrops · 26/02/2019 22:12

Ooh I should do mine. Is there a certain way to prune, not harshly I presume?

Alabasterangel6 · 26/02/2019 22:18

Please someone teach us what to cut!! I need this information too!

I have a 5 year old grafted siensis wisteria which has abundant leaves and no bloody flowers every May despite being on a south facing wall. It’s got whippy bits all over the place and it’s about 9ft tall by 12ft wide. I can see the little tiny stem buds (leaf buds I think) already this year.

How do you prune it to encourage flower but not so much as you risk killing it!

FrostedSnowdrops · 27/02/2019 06:34

Bumping in the hope of advice for myself and @Alabasterangel6 Blush

quirkychick · 27/02/2019 09:36

We've had our wisteria about 3yrs, it was a mature stem(?) of about 4 or 5ft. It's the first time it's been pruned, but I did ask our gardener who put it in how to do it. He said cut back 3 buds on the thicker stems. Double check, though cos I'm no expert!

ILikTheBred · 28/02/2019 00:17

Looks like your gardener was right @quirkychick - same is recommended here.

It just feels a bit drastic somehow!

I left the long, thin shoots, but mine is quite young, so hasn't got lots of stems etc. I did cut back one long, branch last summer, actually, or it would have ended up in the kitchen window Smile.

Alabasterangel6 · 28/02/2019 19:53

I’m going to get brave and prune tomorrow. I’m a tad worried I’m not doing the right thing most tendrils have 40+ buds so taking it back to 5/6 seems very drastic!!

JellySlice · 26/03/2019 14:49

Are these flower buds?

Too late to prune wisteria ?
ILikTheBred · 05/04/2019 14:59

Bit late responding - but yes they are! Probably more obvious now.
