Keeping brambles at bay

I have an area at the back of the garden which is overrun with brambles. I cut about a quarter of it back today, will need to dig the roots out but I'm in denial about that

When it's clear, how can I keep it clear? I'm thinking to put some raised beds there, but it's an odd shape so there will be areas around it. Can I put a covering down? Any suggestions other than this?

The have deep running roots, so continually spring up. I just cut any new shoots on a regular basis. In the hope that it weakens the plant.

I sorry to say it, but you will have to dig them out, I have done it, they still come back but not as bad. As beebumble said, they have very deep roots, so just get out what you can.

You need to dig out the roots, it's the only way. You might get a few little bits grow back, but they are easily removed compared to the big ones.

Thanks all. I've replaced my garden fork today in anticipation of root digging - depends on my dcs' moods this week as to whether I'll get any gardening done (half term)!

If you are willing to use weedkiller then glyphosate works, spray it on the leaves. I can't remember the brand name but it should be named as active ingredient on bottle.

longtimelurkerhelen · 17/02/2019 20:15

Please don't use glyphosate, especially if you are planning to grow veg there, there is a possibility that it can cause cancer. Also very bad for wildlife.

Thanks, but I was steering clear of weedkiller - I have a 3yo and this area is quite accessible. Well, it will be when I've hacked back the brambles Grin

I had to dig out a load of brambles from a bed. Hard work, but ultimately there are few shoots coming back now. So courage!
