Digging everything up, trying to get rid of the weeds, improving the soil and then replanting with a bit more design in mind?

I've inherited a bed with nothing in particular in it, which I've slapped things into and then have to spend most of the summer digging out comfrey, random blind bulbs and Japanese anemone. I'm wondering if it would be better to start with a clean slate?

And if so, when?

Definitely! It will be super lovely!

I reckon clearing it all out and improving the soil now is a good idea. You could even put in daffodils and tulips now (saw them grown on at the garden center yesterday)

Then do a planting plan. And so save money filling it you could buy seeds and germinate them, or buy plug plants and grow them bigger, cheaper than buying full size plants.

Yup.
Dig out the lot.
Put anything you want to keep into pots in a shady corner
Dig as deep as you can and remove ALL roots.
Backfill with Compost (B&Q normally have incredible deals on peat free at this time of year)
and then replant with what you want there

Ok you may have convinced me (I'm lazy.. I hadn't factored that in).

I've got 4 metres by 2 metres of hellebores to lift out first, then an amerlanchi which has an awful shape, then a dozen hollyhocks (do they transplant ok - I think they have tap roots?)

I might just out aside one of the veg beds for storing everything. I have to sort out a digger for the Easter project (a patio!) so could use that to help with ground works.

The three roses would definitely like to be moved and fed!

Ooh I'll have your hellebores! I need to fill that size on our front drive, have recently discovered them and think they are lovely!
