Climber to cover fence

Hi, we have a fairly small garden and would like to cover the fences with a climber to make it look prettier! My mother in law is a keen gardener and has suggested ivy but then I have read that it can be quite destructive. It is a west facing garden and there are fences on all sides. Any suggestions?

Clematis Montana. Grows like a weed and you get the prettiest flowers in the spring.

You'll need to provide it some wires to climb up though. It wraps its stems and leaves around things to grow upwards rather than putting down roots on every surface it touches like ivy.

I agree with clematis although I had armandai. We used it to grow up our garage (with wired support) looked lovely. The buyers of the house loved it too

I love a clematis but also have a climbing hydrangea and a passion flower which both look beautiful too and provide great coverage.

Also try climbing or rambling roses, Paul's Himalayan Musk is a wonderful rambler and Albertine is a very prolific climber.

Honeysuckle
Passion flower
Sweet pea (replace every year)
Perennial pea
Golden hop

This rose is thornless it has an amazing perfume and grows a mile. Minute with beautiful yellow flowers. Because it is thornless it is very easy to train. It flowers early so I would pair it with a blue or purple clematise

Sorry posted too soon. It is called Banksaei Lutea. There is a white variety too. Now is a good time to plant bare rooted roses.

You’re right to avoid ivy! One of my rookie errors when I started this garden was planting ivy up the fences. It’s far too vigorous and controlling it is a headache.

Wonderful- thanks so much everyone
